DevsAdvocate 112 Posted November 19, 2010 How hard is it to become an FFL in this state? Can you take possession of firearms not normally allowed for civilian sale? Can you take those firearms out to the range at all? What are some of the restrictions here?
vjf915 456 Posted November 19, 2010 From my limited knowledge, it is a pretty lengthy process. I believe that you need something along the lines of a viable place to do business. I would imagine that if you do NOT own a shop, you would probably at least need a decent sized safe. As for taking the guns to a range, that is partially dependent upon the range rules. Some ranges specify that automatic fire is not allowed.
coldsolderjoint 84 Posted November 19, 2010 The main requirements to overcome are 1. local zoning laws (Have to be allowed to sell guns) and 2. selling/transferring guns for a profit/business. If you are thinking about becoming an 01 FFL to get around laws of this state for hobby purposes, its not legal, and probably not worth it unless you alrealdy have an established business. vjf915 456 Posted November 19, 2010 SO if your intended purpose is for profit, then it is legal.....but not to get around gun laws, even though that is a perk. Good to know. I have also been interested in this topic, so I will be keeping an eye on this!

Radek 73 Posted November 19, 2010 An FFL and a private range - that's the ticket to firearms nirvana!
Maksim 1,504 Posted November 19, 2010 The BATF has been cracking down on hobby FFL's... however the largest issue is not that, but rather getting the approval from the local boards. As CSJ mentioned, you MUST first get approval from your town... your town will want to see a retail location for the most part. Then you apply to get NJ approval, then you apply for the BATF ffl approval.
CageFighter 236 Posted November 19, 2010 anyone reccomend a "gun friendly" city in NORTH nj?

halbautomatisch 60 Posted November 20, 2010 A few of the more important things to keep in mind. As stated earlier the first hurdle is town zoning must approve your use for your retail location (or spend a lot of money in court). You will need to have an actual business in operation - file all necessary paperwork with the IRS and NJ Div. of Taxation. If you live in the same building you will need a separate entrance for you customers to enter directly into the sales area. You will be inspected and audited regularly by the NJSP & ATF. You will need a security system and other security measures that are approved by the NJSP.
