Hypothetical question regarding brandishing

Recommended Posts

Assume you live in an apartment building and are at home one night. You hear a knock at the door and see a suspicious looking man through the peep hole. Question 1: How do you answer the door? Gun in hand? gun within reach? gun tucked into your pants? completely naked wearing only a shoulder holster? Question 2: if you answer the door with the gun visible in your hand, but at your side, and the guy turns out to be your neighbor asking to borrow some butter, are you doing anything illegal? You are still technically on your property but you gun is exposed to the public. What are the laws regarding this?

gun one in the chamber finger in register and gun point down behind my body so it can not be plainly seen..... opening the door with my left hand using the door as a shield foot against base of door to support it... g/f about 15 feet back inside doorway of bathroom.. carbine locked and loaded also in register safety off if applicable.. keeping in mind we don't ever get unannounced visitors.. so the scenario you described would be incredibly unusual for me..

I mean even when I answer the door for something like a food delivery I'm expecting there is always a gun holstered on me..

allowing the gun in plain sight allows for the debate going down that whole road of intimidating someone with a gun.. a road I am not interested in traveling..

also I have NO interest in broadcasting to anyone that there are firearms in my home.. it only increases the likelihood of my home being broken into when not home..

Kinda reminds me of the guy in the movie Tremors. The guy with the whole arsenal. They did however need and use a lot of his weapons on the nasty creatures so there ya go.

If I was delivering food and I saw the guy holstering a handgun I might be inclined to call the police.

He subscribes to the "better safe than sorry" method obviously. Whatever makes him happy, cool, whatever makes you happy cool. Do what you want I say.

having a gun holstered at home is something I don't even think about anymore.. a gun is the kind of item where when you need it.. it better be there.. there will be no second chances to run to your safe.. produce your weapon.. rack and load it.. while some nut job is kicking in your front door with a 12 gauge.. I prefer my cx4 carbine for a HD gun.. but my girlfriend can handle that gun the best so it goes to her and I use the handgun..

Vlad, is there a specific reason that you treat every unannounced visitor as a high threat situation? (it's hard to convey tone, I'm asking out of genuine curiosity and not judging)

because I do not get unannounced visitors... people who I do not know knocking on my door IS suspicious.. so hope for the best prepare for the worst.. I live in a very quiet area that is mostly older people or people who work in the casino.. there is never a problem in the complex I live in.. but a short walk (or an even shorter drive 5-10minutes) away there are apartments that experienced a home invasion in the middle of the day... I own a few guns.. if someone suspicious knocked on my door who might represent a threat.. why not utilize those guns to protect myself? I obviously don't want to shoot anyone.. but if someone questionable is trying to get me to open the door.. I am going to be as cautious as I can possibly be.. why? because they might be someone who is simply lost.. or they might be someone casing my apartment.. or worse yet.. they might have every intention of pushing the door in on me when I open it and may stick a loaded gun in my face...

if you have a system.. one that you practice.. the system that you feel is most safe.. utilize it EVERY time.. this way on the off chance that something horrible does happen.. you have the tools to react..

would not see ever.. IWB carry and I wear baggy comfy clothing when at home.. not really making an effort to conceal.. but it is not obvious I have a firearm..

Concealed out of sight, out of mind. A convenient way to do this is to keep something like a holster fanny pack accessible, perhaps with a spare magazine and a cell phone inside. If you go to investigate a bump in the night and see hoodlums running off with your DVD player, just keep in mind that you can't leave your property and chase them down the street.

A dvd player is also not worth my life, nor my freedom. I have absolutely NO intentions of chasing someone down in order to get my property back.

A dog, even a small one that men don't like will hear something and wake up before you will and buy you precious seconds during a home invasion.

Most home invasions begin as a ruse by someone at your door. If you don't know who it is, don't open it. Speak through the door, get a peephole, whatever. A criminal may use a ruse like saying he just hit your car, there was an accident in front of your house, etc. Use common sense and be careful.

Or there might actually be an accident in front of your house, or maybe someone did hit your car. Happened twice to me in the past 3 years.

But yeah, use common sense and look out the window first.

I disagree with not answering the door. Most daytime burglars ring the doorbell with some sort of made-up story to verify that their target is not home prior to breaking in. I see nothing wrong with leaving a pistol in a concealed holster when at home.
