Glock 17 Grip Chop

Recommended Posts

It seems a few people offer the service of chopping off a Glock 17 grip so that it accepts G19 magazines. That would seem to be a neat option for people that wanted a longer barreled gun but still wanted to conceal it, and of course it would be nice for someone living in NJ that wanted a G17 and didn't want to use 10-round magazines...

Thoughts?

I am probably in the minority, but I think it's a good idea. Back when I owned a Glock 34, I considered it. Sold the gun and the issue was moot.

There is a guy right over the border in PA that will do it for you. It would save you some $$$ in shipping if you are nearby. If you are interested I can check in my old PMs here. I know the info is in there somewhere.

Admit it, Old School, I bet you want one.

I don't have a G17 and really have no intentions of getting one unless someone has a used one at a price I cannot refuse. However, for some that would want one, this might be a way to make it "NJ Legal"... and it would still be able to use G17 magazines.

I don't care too much for the stippling, and it might be interesting if Glock offered this variety...

Would it mess up the balance, etc? Would it hurt reliability?

Kinda looks like a more reliable Browning Hi Power.

Idk. I don't own a G17 for the fact that there are no 15 rd mags. I don't see much of a benefit since I own a G19 and I am as accurate as can be with it. I don't think the extra barrel length and sight radius would make me anymore accurate. And to alter a fine weapon like that would be a mistake, in the fact that you would never be able to sell it.

Can't you put a G17 slide and barrel on a G19 Frame?

There is a guy that was at last years shoot at Ft Dix that had this done. I forget his name, but he is from the forum and lives in MD now.

I personally think to each his/her own. You can easily buy a glock frame for $225 and have this mod done if you chose to. At that point, your not distroying the original frame with the gun.

I Would I do this? Hell no. I like the g17 and use it for steel and the glock matches. I keep the g19 for HD. The reasoning was easy because I wanted to make the trigger smoother on teh 17 and not jerk around with something I would use for HD. In the end, Glocks are not expensive guns and can easily be replaced if you screwed it up.

It's easier to pin a 17 magazine than to ruin a good gun. Heck, you can even pin them in a way that lets you disassemble for cleaning too.

I am just a newbie here, but I was thinking the same thing. It seems like it would be easier/better to change the magazine rather than the gun.

I would agree if there were some aesthetics to be ruined, but a Glock is the ultimate utilitarian weapon. Who cares if you take a hacksaw to it, as long as the functionality remains intact or (in this case) is improved.

I thought the AK is the "ultimate utilitarian weapon". :icon_mrgreen:

I just had Cold Bore chop a 17 for me, as well as a bunch of other work and it came out great!!! I bought the 17 with the intention of chopping it to accept 15 mags. I could care less about the resale value personally as I have no intentions of selling it, it's my main defense platform. Once my next GSSF coupon arrives, I'll be adding another and setting it up the exact same way.

What I had done -

- Grip Chop 17-19

- Partial Grip Reduction

- 360* Tactical Texture

- Texture Forward Frame Flats

- Recess Mag Catch

- Remove Finger Grooves

- Undercut Trigger Guard

Removing the finger groves may have ben the best thing I could have done besides the grip chop. My fingers just didn't line up with them and for me... they're unnecessary. Overall the pistol is far better than it was originally. The difference is night and day. Lane at Cold Bore is a great guy to do bussiness with too. This is the second pistol I've had Lane do and both have been above my expectations.

I am IN DIFF ERRR ENT. You want to do it, do it. It's not like your destroying a prized family heirloom. I mean, it's a piece of plastic and your cutting off like 1 inch from the bottom. Do as you wish.

I don't think the grip chop gains anything unless you have to put the gun in a smaller box. I've carried 17s, 19s, and 26s for about 15 years. There is no difference AFAIC with concealing a 19 vs a 17. The slight difference in size is not a consideration. I traded my issue 19 for a issue 17 (carried concealed).

A shorter grip would aid in concealment if you were able to do that. The thought would be that you would have a gun with a slightly longer sight radius, and potentially a little heavier to aid in recoil management. The additional benefit in NJ would be that you could carry one with 15-round magazines, stock, without having to modify them and you could purchase extra ones anywhere.

I don't think the benefit would be that big to go ahead and do it just to have one, but if you lived in NJ and picked up the full size one very cheaply, it might be a nice way to get a usable gun with much of the G19s versatility. Or, if you already own one and it is not a GEN 4 and you wanted a slight grip-size reduction, then this might be a consideration as well.

And, if you were short in height, a shorter grip would enable you to better conceal.

I don't understand why Glock won't release a 15 round 17/34 magazine. S&W did it with the fullsize M&P mags. Glock would sell a ton of them.

:(

Most theirs customer, are LEAs & they don't need mag capacity reduction.

Easier make 10 rounders to keep it legal in compliant states, then invest in

15 rounders for citizens of Socialist State of NJ.Business is business.IMO
