Anyplace to go plinking around here?

Recommended Posts

I'd just like to take my 10/22 out someplace and shoot something besides paper. I figure limiting it to rimfire cartridges might open up some options, but it seems like all we have are private clubs (I don't get to shoot often enough to justify the dues) or skeet/clay for shotgunners (just haven't gotten there yet).

I'd love to be able to go all hickok45 somplace and pop the hell outta some soda cans & steel plates, etc. Is there anyplace around here (closer to Union County the better) I can do that? I'm sick of shooting holes in paper at a whopping 25 yards.

And before anybody mentions it, yes I'd LOVE to move out of NJ but it just ain't happening :roulette:

Get together with someone who has a valid NJ Hunting License and go to the Clinton WMA. So long as you pick up after yourself, you can shoot whatever you'd like!

I didn't think you could shoot handguns or centerfire rifles at the Clinton WMA rifle range. I've only been there once. Perhaps I was in the wrong area...

TRAINING AREA REGULATIONS

  • All WMA regulations apply.
  • At least one (1) member of the shooting party must have a current, valid New Jersey hunting license in possession.
  • Shotgun is for fine shot (lead-free at Assunpink; smaller than No. 4 lead or No. T steel ammunition) only. NO BUCKSHOT OR RIFLED SLUGS
  • Archery is for target or practice tips only - No broadheads.
  • Muzzleloader is for muzzleloading firearms, shotguns with rifled slugs or buckshot and modern .22 caliber rimfire rifles only.
  • No handguns or centerfire rifles permitted.
  • Hours are 8:00 a.m. - sunset (except Black River WMA, see below)
  • Clinton Muzzleloader/Rifle Range Rules

Clinton Muzzleloader/Rifle Range Rules and Closures

The following rules apply to the Clinton Muzzleloader/Rifle Range Only:

  • All target frames must measure a minimum 30 inches from its base to the bottom of the paper target held in the frame. Frames must be placed only on top of a target mound located at the 25, 50 and 100 yard lines. This minimum target height requirement will eliminate the risk of ricochet and ensure that all projectiles are collected in the berm behind the 100 yard target.
  • Shooters may supply their own frames which meet the above specifications, or use those provided on-site by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
  • Spinner type targets for .22 caliber firearms MUST be placed directly at the base of the 25 yard berm so that all bullets are directed into the berm. These targets are not to be used at other yardage or berm placement.
  • Range will be closed during Hunter Education sessions. The following closure date(s) and time(s) are currently scheduled:
    Tuesday, August 9, 5:30pm-8:30pm
    Thursday, August 11, 9am-5pm
    Sunday, August 14, 8am-2pm

The OP mentioned a 10/22, which is a rimfire rifle, and asked about shooting whatever targets he'd like.

Ahhh. I didn't know that was a rimfire but then he said that in his post. I'd like to find a public outdoor location where I can shoot 5.56 and 7.62 centerfire.

phillipsburg pistol club has both indoor and outdoor range, its about 5 minutes closer than Easton. Im about 85% sure you can shoot cans and steel plates outside.  the club is handgun and rimfire only but since your only looking to shoot .22.

You guys ever hear automatic fire there?

It's me, I'm right across the river. Tannerite, too. I'm not aware of any blasting in that location so that's probably us as well. There is blasting once you get north of Bethlehem.

phillipsburg pistol club rule 15

  • Post only paper targets on a backer in each firing lane, at eye level from the intended shooting position. Use of non-paper targets is permitted only during club sanctioned events.

I stand corrected. I could have swore I've seen bowling pins and steel plates on the outdoor part of the range.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. It's not from EFGA, it's from me. EFGA is too far away to hear from Phillipsburg, and they don't allow automatic fire. If you hear automatic fire from P-burg, it's probably us, we're right across the river.

Easton Fish and Game- https://www.efga.net/join/

EDIT: I know it's not a "public" range, but it's $30/year. That's less than you would pay for 2 hours at an indoor range in NJ.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but how can they afford to charge only $30?

There are probably 50 rod and gun clubs within 20 miles of Easton that charge $25 to $100 a year for membership.

East Bangor charged $5 until recently. And they let you plink, but checking their website, seems they cleaned up the place.

You can't stand in the Lehigh Valley without having one or two gun clubs within 5 miles in every compass direction. Where I live most boroughs have 2 and townships have several each.

So maybe OakRidge really was talking about a real place to shoot. Interesting.
