Phillies 2 Posted June 3, 2012 I got a handgun at Atlantic Tactical last week and just today I looked at the receipt. I noticed I was charged $25 for the NICS fee? Does that make any sense? Maybe the store just charged me the wrong price by accident? Or did that fee go up?
Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted June 3, 2012 $15 AFAIK. Not sure if the fee is fixed by statute or NJAC - one of the dealers on here can chime in on that - but if it's not, I would assume a dealer could charge anything they want. Wouldn't see any of my business though - $15 is already ridiculous, compared to the free world price. Adios, Pizza Bob
tj462nj 32 Posted June 3, 2012 nics has not increased, its $15+tax=$16.
PK90 3,569 Posted June 3, 2012 Some dealers hide extra income in the NICS fees. AFAIK, they have been $15 + tax since forever.
bry@n 195 Posted June 3, 2012 I think this was discussed earlier and a dealer said they can charge anything they choose for nics or maybe in passing I heard a dealer say this to me. Not sure.
halbautomatisch 60 Posted June 4, 2012 I know of some dealers (in NJ and PA) that charge more than cost for NICS fees, they claim the difference is for their time and labor to process the NICS fee. For this reason I always ask what I am going to be charged for the NICS before I finalize any deals, usually I find you can negotiate the fees to what the dealer actually pays. Charging anything more than actual cost for a NICS check is total BS, the work needed to do it is part of general overhead. What else are they going to put on your bill, a surcharge for electricity? a surcharge for their rent/property taxes?
The_Matrix 105 Posted June 4, 2012 In Pennsylvania, I thinks its 2 or 3 bucks! That's what cabela charged me.

Phillies 2 Posted June 4, 2012 I called Atlantic Tactical. They said company policy is to charge $25 for NICS. Lucky for me I did get a great price on my pistol, a price alot cheaper than what I'm seeing online so I still made out good....
this_is_nascar 162 Posted June 4, 2012 It's no differences than those companies that rape you on shipping costs. They make it sound that you're getting a great deal for the cost of the item, then charge the crap out of you for shipping. Sounds like this place does the same for NICS. bigdogNJ 0 Posted June 25, 2012 At Dover Sports Goods on RT 46 i bought a rifle the owner Lou he charged me $17 for the N.C.I.C. check this was the first gun i ever bought and i was expecting a transfer fee but there wasn't any NICE! I see places like RTSP in Randolph charge $75 for non members and $50 for members on transfer fees.
Krdshrk 3,872 Posted June 25, 2012 Transfer fees are for when you're buying from out of state from another person/retailer. Not for when you buy direct.
Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted June 25, 2012 PICS is different And rubbing in how PA is better is just not nice Not really - they are both "Point of Service" NICS suppliers. PASP in PA an NJSP in NJ. NJ runs it like a phone porn site, using a 900 number and the $15 NICS charge just appears on the phone bill. Both act as intermediaries as opposed to going directly to NICS (FBI) as they do in most other states. Adios, Pizza Bob
mipafox 438 Posted June 25, 2012 I won't pay a PICS/NICS fee when I buy from dealer stock. Ever. Not even NFA.

djg0770 481 Posted June 27, 2012 The hassle of dealing with that 900 number and the fact that they often drop calls or fail to pickup the phone in time leads to quite a pain in the arse to the dealer as they have to keep immaculate records if they want a refund for those calls. It becomes a pass through cost... I agree it sucks.

PK90 3,569 Posted June 28, 2012 I spent 2 hours yesterday going over my phone bill comparing it to what I should have been charged. I keep records on top of records. This NJ NICS system sucks. There was a 20% overage, meaning they owe me a lot of credits (money), which will be a bigger pain in the asss to use. Their phone system is the worse. I don't know who is making money off of gun buyers, the NJSP or MCI, but it isn't dealers.

YOU CAN'T GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE. That is correct. I don't pay for healthcare because I cannot afford it nor will anyone force me to buy it! I also get my lead and brass for free. I buy my guns at dealer cost with no sales tax. So yes you can get somethings for nothing!
