Question for all you AK and Saiga converters

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of converting my 5.45x39 Saiga. I've done all the hard work and I am currently putting the gun back together. I used one of the conversion kits from CSS and added the JTE main spring and Ultimak railed gas tube.

My original plan was to modify the lower hand-guard from the Saiga. However, after some thought I think I would rather buy one. I like the AK galil style but they don't work with my setup [5.45 w/ ultimak as the ultimak is held on by u clamps not by the typical handguard axle pin]. I don't see anything I like on CSS or Dinzag.

I prefer to buy a plastic style lower hand-guard at a reasonable price <$45. Can anyone suggest a hand-guard or retailer/manufacturer I may be missing?

You are stuck when it comes to the Ultimak gas tube. I have one too. It really only fits a standard AK lower grip, which is too bad since I wanted a full length lower handguard. I got regular KVAR front stock set. Unfortunately, they do not sell the upper and lower handguard separately. You have to buy the set for $50. I am still considering taking a dremel to my stock Saiga lower handguard. I want to see that sucker melt!

traditional AK lower handguard and retainer is the way to go IMO.. it is expensive but fits really well.. I dont feel the need for a full length on this gun because the rail gives me access to flashlight and red dot.. receiver is longer than an AR to begin with.. so traditional AK works great as far as length..
