NJScott 15 Posted July 19, 2012 Many thanks to Ira Levin at Legend Firearms for supplying me with this beauty. I'll have to invest in an S&W ref book to make sure, but I THINK it's of 80's vintage. Just an awesome, superbly-made piece of firearms art. Can't wait to get some rounds down-range!
M4BGRINGO 139 Posted July 19, 2012 Nice guns aren't they. So nice the wifey didn't want to share hers and I had to buy my own! We have a 6" and a 8 3/8" version.

BullzeyeNJ 104 Posted July 19, 2012 Congrats! Thats a keeper. I consider it a "must have" in any revolver collection. Classic and utilitarian. A "go to" gun if there ever was one.
Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted July 19, 2012 I'll have to invest in an S&W ref book to make sure, but I THINK it's of 80's vintage. I'll save you the money. PM me your serial number and I can give you the year (appx - S&W was not exactly linear when doling out serial numbers). Also give me the engineering variation (the "dash" number after the model number under the crane) as a double check. Adios, Pizza Bob Congrats BTW - everyone needs at least one revolver in their collection.

The initial one was the very first handgun I ever purchased: a Model 37 Chief's Special with a nickel finish, which I still have and still enjoy taking to the range....sparingly. It is definitely going to replace the Glock I have in the nightstand as the primary HD firearm, that's for sure ;-)
NJScott 15 Posted July 19, 2012 Nice guns aren't they. So nice the wifey didn't want to share hers and I had to buy my own! We have a 6" and a 8 3/8" version. IMO, the 6" barrel on this gun pretty much is the limit on what I'd shoot comfortably. I cannot begin to imagine what the 8 3/8" version is like, LOL. I'd love to try it out though, so if you're ever up this way I'll treat for an hour at the PBA range here.

bry@n 195 Posted July 20, 2012 Congrats. The 686 is a great revolver. The big question is how much you got it for?
Smokin .50 1,907 Posted July 20, 2012 Congrats on the 686! You're really going to enjoy that thing, and you'll soon discover the fun of making one ragged hole in a target (if you haven't done so already) because that gun will shoot better than most people, lol!
