I signed up for some 1:1 training with GunForHire and had a couple or so hours with Chuck today. This was probably the hardest/toughest but best training I've had to date. Getting the 1:1 feedback really made a difference in my technique and in solving some of the inconsistencies I was finding due to my stance, sight picture and trigger control that are not possible during a standard class with many students.

Definitely worth the time/effort, came back exhausted. Shot around 250 rounds between the PPQ and Sig P226. Now I just have to repeat the exercises during my RTSP trips. It was very rewarding to see my groups at 10 yards significantly improve during the couple of hours and really shows how much difference technique makes - i.e. I am limiting my accuracy rather than the firearm.

At the start of the class Chuck asked me what I'd like to focus on, I showed him the Travis Haley target from my recent RTSP trip (http://njgunforums.c...-target-drills/) where I had struggled to hit 5 shots in 5 dots. We tried 5 dots at 3 yards, then switched to 3/5/7/10 yards exercises with the GFH targets and focusing on technique including stance, arms, grip, sigh picture, trigger control etc. Exercises included rapid 2 shot, 1 shot; 3 shot, 2 shot and transitions to targets that were to my left and right. All the time focus on the core fundamentals.

For the last exercise of the day we switched back to the Travis Haley target and I scored multiple 5 shots, 5 dots :gaming:

Highly recommended for anyone looking to improve their technique with some good, constructive feedback from the Instructor.

A+++

Which courses would have to be taken to be considered GFH alumni?

Any courses other then special events, i.e. Smokin Gun, etc.

Also the Wombat can attest they can sometimes be a bear to schedule. Between range availability and Instructor and student schedule. Just a heads up.

Agreed, scheduling can be a bit of a challenge at times, however well worth it. The added benefit now is that when I do the group training with GFH the instructors Chuck/Joe will be keeping an even closer eye on me for the specifics we covered on the 1:1 training. An added bonus (I think!)

Overall well worth it and my thanks (as usual) to GFH and the team.

So how does a "normal" guy qualify for a session / alumni status?

Anthony will need to confirm - however my guess would be taking something like Urban Pistol 1 & 2 or some of the Simunitions training. I would highly recommend Simunitions even for experienced shooters as it is an eye-opener in my view. You can see the training I've taken in my sig and I've posted feedback on most classes.

I have been asked to run a class to prepare people for carrying a defensive firearm by my home range, Phillipsburg Pistol club.
It will be held on August 6th, from noon until approx. 4pm.
We will cover safe use of a holster and a number of defensive shooting techniques.
The class will finish with running each student through HQC1 and a certificate will be provided for those that achieve a passing score.
It is open to all, but members of Phillipsburg Pistol Club will have spots reserved for them.

Going to do a few posts on at home training including what you need, how to do it safely and cover some drills.  From basic to some more advanced stuff.  Really the importance is to focus on perfecting the basics and make it become second nature.  It's important to start slowly, fix any mistakes, and build proper muscle memory.  Avoid getting sloppy or lazy and developing training scars.
Practice does not make perfect.  Practice makes permanent.  Only perfect practice makes perfect.
I like to spend about 20 minutes a few days a week.  5 minutes for setup and clean up, and 15 minutes for practice.  That's all that's really needed.  Make sure you have a goal in mind on what you want to focus on.  This will prevent you from getting sloppy and getting training scars, and will help you stay interested by allowing you to constantly improve.

      SAFETY:
Setup a safe area where you will not be interrupted.  Place your targets in the safest position in case of an accidental misfire.
Immediately check and make your gun clear.  Do the same with the magazines you will be practicing with (recommend 2 empty magazines).
Retrieve all of the items you might need for this training.  You don't want to have to go back into the safe or storage where your live guns and ammo are once you start practicing.
Store and lock up all live ammunition away from where you will be doing the training for the entire duration of the training.  If you can't lock it up, it should be in a separate room where you will not go until your training session is totally finished and you are putting everything away.
Every time you pick up the gun, check that it is clear.  Even though you know its clear, this creates the mindset to always check the status of a gun when you pick it up.
When you are done training, you are done.  Don't go back and do one more thing after you start putting things away.  This is when accidents happen.
