Good morning all, I am applying for another 2 permits and was wondering if out of state ( New York) references are ok to use,or am I better off using only New Jersey? Thanks very much.

Although I don't see any specific instruction on the state application not to use out of state references, the form my local police department gives out says NJ residents for references. If you can, stick with NJ references, otherwise could make a long process even longer.

I used one NJ resident and one from CO. As long as they send back in a timely matter shouldn't be a problem.

One of my references was from wv and he actually got his before mine did here in nj

I used NJ references just to be safe but there's no requirement. The two of them actually have FID cards as well.

I used a NY reference and had no problem

When I first applied I used NY as well. But I've just submitted for an address change in Jersey City and it states " It is asked that they reside within the City of Jersey City..." But I used the same references from the first time I applied, so I will know if they will change my address on the FID?! In about 4-6 weeks.

So, now if they get their way, you'll need *five* references residing in a town where you've just moved to and met your neighbors. I don't think I could line up 5 references from within my town. I just don't know my liberal neighbors well enough to ask them to do that for me.

I'm in PArsippany and I used a reference who resided in NYC.
