The recent events have really gotten me fed up with this state. I am seriously considering trying to move to PA or Northern New England in the next few years. I have lived my entire live in NJ and Its a part of my identity, but I feel like its only a matter of time before things get way worse for gun owners here, even if we win this latest round. I will see how much of this new legislation passes before I fully commit to wanting to move, however. If the worst of the bills are squashed, I suppose I can probably continue to deal with our current system.

I just got offered a chance to suck on the states tits and I am in desperate need of an employment upgrade so I'm sticking around to use my earnings to fund my projects in PA & AZ. I hope for the best prepare for the worst if it gets hostile I'm gone.

I always planned to spend my elder years traveling with most of the year spent overseas but with New Jersey as home base. Now I fear that is up for debate.....The recent developments in New Jersey and indeed America with these asinine gun laws is just a harbinger of a larger, more insidious trend towards largely abandoning the constitutional republic for a more socialist slant.

I fear that is the straw that broke this camel's back.

Put it this way, it’s hard enough to live here while working and I’m very close to retirement. That said I’m NJ born and bred and was planning on hanging around a while longer but if they are going to f**K us again with another AWB that will only help to push us out sooner. It will not be the main reason to leave but it will factor in to our decision to leave. Keep in mind the state motto is “Liberty and Prosperity” and we have not had either in a very long time. Liberty and Prosperity are both in rapid decline in this state so any further loss (of either) will only push us out sooner. The state motto should be changed to something like “NJ, the Nanny state”

I went ahead and edited your poll to add in one more option... staying until the next gun laws pass....

Which in our case, is pretty much spot on. Will we be leaving nj for good? no.... but we will be buying a place out of state to make our primary residence. The money saved will be well worth it and will cover the moves/mortgage.

I added one more option as well.. lol

want a little inspiration... super close family friend.. LEO, and nurse... uprooting their family to cross the border into America, leaving behind fairly successful careers..... you are never stuck.. don't tell yourself that.. in the greater scheme of things we are granted a very small time to live our lives.. I am only 35 and wasted a lot of years being stupid.. wasting time... took my 24 year old fiance to open my eyes... to show me how to live life.. if you want to go.. then go.. if you want anything get it.. don't sit around and wait for what you want.. you may die waiting...

How'd that "exit tax" I've heard about work? I'm starting to plan.

I am outta here in 3-4 years. My wife has an employment contract that runs for 3 more years and that will be enough of New Jersey. The problem here is our only hope is it doesn't get terribly worse. There is absolutely no hope for improvement or a better life here

... and the reality is.. NJ is not going to get far better any time soon. The trends are all heading other directions. As long as we have stupid people living in the state voting for any blue name... we will have more and more spending, higher and higher taxes.

While this state has its perks... although I can't remember any at the moment, you can only deal with the uber high taxes (2nd highest in the nation as per the tax foundation, behind NY 12.4% of your income between state and local), increasing crime, political red tape, and the weather. =P

If we have gun laws stating that I must prove to taking firearms training, waiting months to buy a pistol with 10 round magazines, and no way to legally protect myself outside of the home? What is the point of living here? someone please remind me.

If it was not for my entire family being in NJ and eastern PA... would of been long gone.

Looking at places to buy in NJ... lol. over $1k a month in property taxes? For what?

Every person I spoke with who left NJ.... does not regret it one bit... this includes a lot of working age young people.

Same here. People I grew up with have ended up in Florida, Manie, the Carolina's, Colorado, etc. and they all pretty much say the same thing. Now that they have experienced something different, they realize that NJ sucks...and they are much happier now in general.

We have been looking for a larger house here in NJ for several years. Now we're talking about becoming "snowbirds" and splitting time between NC and NJ.

NJ is #2 for overall tax burden, was the #1 state that people want to move out of according to one moving company's annual survey, and it's #4 in unemployment.

It's not the Assembly's gun bills. It's the Assembly's gun bills added to everything else. And that's whether or not Christie and/or Sweeney eliminate many or most of the bills.

NJ's firearms laws are just another symptom of the thinking that has gotten the state so bollixed up.

I was born here, I love the Jersey shore, but I sure don't want to die here.

I'm planning on leaving one way or another... It's not just about guns... although this is the final straw... It's the taxes, stupid laws in general, corrupt politics, (yes, I know it exists elsewhere, but not quite like here), traffic, insurance rates, etc., etc.. I'm tired of people reaching into my pockets. Let's face it... NJ is just a tough state to fathom and it never seems to get better. My goal is to retire in AZ or TN... but I'd rather sell the house, invest in the largest RV I can buy and travel the US... There is so much beauty here to see in this country... Not enough vacations in the world to do it.

exit tax is +-2% of the sold price of the home, unless you can prove you are moving in state. I have a coworker that relocated to MO last year and had to pay it.

Pretty easy loophole: find a friend/family member that will allow you to use their address for 6 months as a rental. thats all it takes from what I'm told.

edit: Looked it up and its pretty damn confusing!

here is an interesting exerpt from my research on it:

The most significant one (for this market, at least) is number 7: "The gain from the sale will not be recognized for Federal income tax purposes under Internal Revenue Code Section 721, 1031, 1033...." In other words, if a married couple has lived in the property as their primary residence for two of the past five years, property gain up to $500,000 does not incur tax. If the Feds don't tax it, New Jersey won't.

I am waiting for the inevitable lay off or retirement, whichever comes first. We've been shopping for homes in the lower Keys...

I left 8-9 Months ago and there was no exit tax. That only pertains to houses as a 2nd residence or you lives there less than 5(?) years.

Btw, there were a few reasons I left:

1-Car insurance. Was paying $6200 (+/-) for the 4 of us in NJ. Paying $2,300 now.

2- Paying about the same in property tax but have twice as much yard and literally twice the house.

3-Income tax. 3% vs 6% in NJ. With me and the wife working it's a HUGE difference.. Also, 6% vs 7% sales tax. I get gas in NJ.

4-Private schooling. I have no idea why it's so much cheaper but we're saving $7,000 per year and the kids are doing better...no PC BS.

5-Gun laws. Buy a pistol on Monday...decide you want another on Saturday you simply just go. Also, LTCF is 20 minutes and 20 bucks in my county. It varies through the state.

6-This was an ADDED bonus I did not expect. The mentality in NJ is all laws are right and anyone that deviates government authority is a radical. Meaning, government knows best and you're a radical if you question them. PA it's a bit different. They question why you DON'T have guns. They question why you're not involved with local school boards, elections etc. Also, in my area it's about a 65% to 35% Conservative to Liberal belief. So it's nice being around like minded people. Also, I'm amazed how there are 4-5 neighbors that know who George Soros is, that have shot guns daily and believe what I believe regarding this administration and the direction our country is headed. In my old area, none of my neighbors ever shot a gun and when I asked if they'd like to go, they did not talk to me since asking.

Anyway, with that said, PA could end up being the next NJ. I don't really know of any save havens. You may buy yourself some time going to other states, but if the Feds keep growing at the rate they're growing something's gotta' give and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Another reason I moved to PA, I know this sounds conspiratorial, but if NJ goes completely down the tubes it's a perfectly water locked state with the exception of North Jersey. This could spell disaster trying to get out if everything collapses. Not a main reason for the move, but something that crossed my mind a few times.

I can't get the family on board. They complain about NJ all the time but the second I mention moving they all look at me like I'm an idiot. My wife is somewhat on board, but faces a lot of pressure from her family.

BTW, gun laws are still not in the top 10 reasons for me to move out of NJ, there are much worse things here.
