hey was reading didnt see it anywhere but do you need a permit ID to own a crossbow like how we need one for firearms? can i use it in my backyard to shoot targets?

No permit is required to purchase or own a crossbow. They are not considered firearms.

My friend and I shoot our crossbows in his backyard, but he lives in a more rual setting than I do. His house backs up on 80 or so acres of woods.

I need to have a chat with my local law enforcement officers before I set up an archery target in my backyard. I don't know if archery shooting would be 'frowned upon' in my township or not, but I'd rather ask first than find out the hard way.

Good luck!

Jeff

You will need to check with your local police dept. There are towns that consider shooting an arrow a "discharge", so just make sure this is not the case where you are. I spoke to the detective when I picked up my P2Ps and he told me that my town has no laws or problems with this, but he did suggest that I use a backstop of some sort when shooting. So I built one out of 2x6s and carpets I had lying around.

Anyone recomend a good, decently price starter xbow? I am looking at one at Midway USA that a buddy recommended but I don't know anything about them. it is a Horton Bone Crusher HD 175 with a 4x32 scope, 325 fps, 93 ft lbs kin energey and about 8.5 pounds which is all Japanese to me.... In comparing other bows across MANY other sites, 399 seems reasonable for this.... but I would ove some suggestions!

I am VERY happy with Horton products. I have a Horton Havoc, and love it.

The Bone Collector is a traditional crossbow design with the limbs out front. 175# draw weight, at 325 fps is very respectable, and is plenty powerful enough to hunt with should you choose to do so. I'd say that is a fair price for what you get. Horton is a well respected company in the archery world and is known for well engineered products and solid customer service, should you have an issue.

You definately get what you pay for in the world of crossbows, as my friend and I discovered. For not much more money than a 'starter' xbow, you can step up to a nice piece of gear, and eliminate a lot of problems.

If you haven't read it, check this out: http://njgunforums.c...eded-crossbows/

This tells the experience my friend and I had starting out with crossbows. He began with a 'starter' crossbow, and had many issues, which are resolved now. He is now looking to upgrade his equipment in the future.

Happy to share anything I have learned with you, let me know if you have any questions.

Jeff

Depending on what your budget is I would say spend the money and get a Tenpoint Titan or Turbo. If you want to stay in the $500 range go with Wicked Ridge Crossbow. They are made by Tenpoint. Its the most reliable and durable crossbows out there.
