Bachelor Party ideas

Recommended Posts

My buddy is getting married soon and as a member of the wedding party I'm helping to plan the bachelor party. It goes without saying, but I will anyway, that there will be absolutely no drinking and firearms, no bad behavior at the range, and no illegal or unethical behavior of any kind.

The plan was to start the day in testosterony fashion--perhaps a steak breakfast then a trip to the range. I have plenty of firearms experience, the groom is limited to a few trips to the range with me, and a few in the party have never handled a firearm. All are supportive and interested in the outing, however.

Most of the party lives in NYC. One option is to meet at a local NJ range (IE bullet hole) where I can give the safety instruction on my firearms. But the groom has already been through those paces, and I'd like it to be something new for everyone. Plus I'm not a certified safety instructor.

My thought was a trip up to RSTP and a private lesson on a platform none of us have tried--AR15 and maybe a magnum revolver. Perhaps calling Gun for Hire to do a one-off lesson on safety and marksmanship? This way we have no firearms in the car when we leave and can head right back to Manhattan.

My only concerns are 1) I don't think RSTP allows reservations, and I don't want us all waiting to get two lanes next to each other. 2) the groom is more of a clay target guy. Unfortunately I don't know any trap ranges that rent firearms.

Any thoughts on a more interesting outing?

Thanks for the help!

Wow--I didn't even now that was possible. Are any of these ranges close to the border? I'll definitely look into it. I would need some kind of instructor on hand, however, since I'm only familiar with the operation of semi-autos and there are a few first timers.

If your into paintball Skirmish PA has a Bachelor Party Package. I've played there before and it was a great day every time I went.

Or if you want to do something in the summer their "Battles and Paddles" Package is another idea.

I wouldn't want to drag a bunch of [people to the Bullet Hole, but that's just me.

There is a Sporting Clays range about 35 minutes from Atlantic City. Awesome place. It's like golf with shotguns (golf carts with holders for your gun). Have an afternoon of shooting then head to AC for a night of fun. Leave your shotguns locked in your trunk.

Love the idea of a clay bird shoot.

Don't like the idea of Bullet Hole, or an indoor range for this event.

Definately worth a phone call to gun for hire.

It's too bad that the private ranges can't or won't accomodate a small group for this purpose. Unless....some of the ranges have clay shoots that are open to the public. If those dates work for your group, why not consider that? I wouldn't suggest storming the range with your group, but rather contacting the league chair ahead of time to let him know your plan. As you know most gun guys are pretty accomodating and with some contact in advance you might find someone willing to go the extra distance to make the event a little more memorable.

An other thought, since most of the group is in NYC, have you considered a trip to Westchester, or CT?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Indeed, there's no way we're going to bullet hole. That's just local to me.

Gun for Hire does events, and it would be great, but it's very expensive per person. RTSP, alternative, will rent the entire range and provide 1 gun and a box of ammo per guest for less than half the cost. It's indoors, however.

Love the outdoor idea. Will check into the shotgun/AC thing.

Here's another vote for Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays! I've been there--quite a nice place! Everything Glenn said is true! Since the Groom is a Shotgunner, he won't feel "stupid" at an event held in his honor not knowing how to bust clays! And there's a Casino with nice restaurants in Bethlehem. It's a straight shot out of the Holland Tunnel to 78 West. In the same "neighborhood" is Cigars International, just off of Rt. 78, so you could shoot, have a nice meal, get some cigars, etc. Only limited by your budget, but for around $150 or so per head, you could do everything I just mentioned.........

Have FUN whatever you decide to do!

Thunder Mountain rents shotguns. Actually use of the shotgun is free with the purchase of the ammo from them. they have Skeet and Trap fields, it's about a 45 minute drive out of NYC in Ringwood NJ.

Total price for a round of 25 clays is about $18. I was just there yesterday shooting.

***ugh edit...should have read all the posts. I see this was covered already.

I may be the damper here, but I don't think a bachelor party is a good place to teach new shooters.

Stupid actions and bachelor parties go together.

Firearms is definitely something you don't want to mix with stupid.

Take the groom and 1 or 2 others for a safe pre party shoot.

After guns go away let the games begin.

I vote:

Get strippers, go shooting (with strippers), go to the steak house(also with strippers), drink heavy(still with strippers).

In that order.

This is the ONLY good advice I see in this thread.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. PeteF--I appreciate the concerns, and I would share them with you if I didn't know most of the guys involved. The firearms portion of the evening would be on the early side--before any alcohol--and involves a group of somewhat nerdy late-20s to early 30-somethings who would much rather be home watching netflix than out at a strip club. This will be a rather tame affair. Of course the obligatory bachelor party events will unfold later in the day. But a nice afternoon on the trap range shouldn't pose a safety concern, especially because we plan to have a safety instructor present.

In any case, I'll give a call to some of the ranges mentioned. Thunder Mountain tops the list if the weather permits. Otherwise RTSP seems a good bet if we can rent out the space after hours.
