The Cicadas Are Coming!

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to share this article I saw on Comcast's website. Apparently the 17 year cycle of Cicadas are coming! According to the video their are several million of these bugs per acre and the noise they make is around 100db's. According to the map they listed NJ as one of the hot spots for these bugs.

Hi Shawn,

How have you been doing? Everything clear up alright after the issue with the online picture? I was very sorry to hear about that and the crazy thing is this could happen to any of us. According to the articles online they were saying its been 17 years for these types of Cicadas. I guess there are several varieties?

There were 1000's of them in West Orange around 1979 and they sounded like UFO's coming through the trees. There were swarms flying all over landing on everything. Did you ever walk through tons of bugs the size of big grasshoppers landing on you?

here are two links that describe the way locusts are cycling, they have 13 and 17 year cycles AND there multiple broods that arrive on their own schedules. Brood II is the one arriving in NJ this year.

Are they editable????

I seriously doubt that you use Microsoft Office on them. It would make a mess, but as far as recipes, there is a bounty on the internet!

here is the first one that Google brought back :-)

I remember them in 79. The streets were carpeted with them in my neighborhood towards the end , and gte smacked by them was a daily occurrence.

The nature freak , photographer with an under used macro lens in me is thrilled. The mother of a dramatic bug phobic 6 year old girl in me is dreading it.

editable? or edible?

edible, yes, technically.. (eww)

as ReadDude said, there are different "broods".... the other brood hit in 2004, so those wont come back for a while... this is the other brood and their planned hatch year is this year..

i think i got lucky last time, we didnt really have that many by our house.. places that have had construction or the ground has been dug up more tend not to have as much since it killed all the eggs lying under the soil.. but i know places like Princeton got it worse than I did at my home..

yes, i hear them every year as well.. there are always some around.. they are loud.. but not like this... (if it happens)

There are annual cicadas that show up in late summer every year. they are a different species than the 17 year locusts.

I was in the Keys the last time around and the only way to get any sleep was to medicate or get drunk...........I can't believe it's been 17 years but recall that this 17 year verity was rather large and enthusiastic.

Hah I am in the same boat. My 5yr old son loves bugs as long as they aren't coming at him. It will be interesting to see how this goes down....

We had our 17 year cicada cycle last decade. Some areas got it worst than others. It would be a loud roar if you were in an area where they all congregated. http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/02/29/loc_cicadas29.html

Here is a good site on the 2013 Cicadas

I don't know a ton about cicadas and I certainly wasn't around in the Carter administration, but I love the sound that they make. I love summer and the sounds/smells of it I can't live without.

I hate those cicadas but I also loathe the cicada killer wasps that show up along with them They nest in the ground and are the size of a B-17..apparently they dont sting but I aint playing with a 4 inch wasp..

They don't have to sting, just looking at them makes me hurt.... i dont mind bugs, bees whatever, but those things are Jurassic in nature.

They sure are.. I had an exterminator at the last year and told him about the wasps.. He said dont worry man they dont sting and on cue one buzzed his head... Ive never seen a man run so fast.. Lol
