Not 100% but there are a number of high worth American citizens who have surrendered their passports and taken up residence in tax havens in order to keep more of what they have earned,and the trend seems to be growing.

In France...properly a moot point. The French has the shortest work week and some of the most liberal vacation and time off in Europe.

There are more non-government workers stuggling to survive with much fewer benefits, although health care, and housing and transportation allowances are enjoyed by all. The health care isn't all that great, and it is the pharmaceutical companies that are raking in the health care money.

The tax the French and increasingly here in America is aimed at high worth individuals who each government targeted as "not paying their fair share"several of the Americans  were dot com wiz kids who decided to move to Singapore,Costa Rica, and even a French actor who was welcomed to Russia with instant residency by Putin.

True but like NJ the public sector is quite large and the ones struggling are overwhelmingly recent immigrants from just about every ex France colony around the globe.

French colonization has been over for some time now, and many of the immigrants that the French imported to help with their formally growing economy are now 5th and 6th generation FRENCHMAN, yet they are blamed for the current problems in their largely socially governed society. It is hard to know what goes on in another country if all you base your understanding is what you read in the media. BTW, most french folks think all Americans eat daily at McDonald's, and likewise Americans think that all French eat fancy modern haute cuisine, which is far from the way that it really is.

Even in the private sector you have more rights than here.

 

My French colleagues who got laid off get 2 yrs of unemployment that is 80% of their salary.

Plus they have an automatic union that can bring you back to work if you re fired abruptly deem that the employer overstepped and harassed you. The notice to be let go is 4 months in which you can still go to work but many dont.

Even if you are demoted they have to pay you the same salary.

I'll take the freedom to make my own success and keep most of the reward for my hard work. Stealing from the rich is still stealing.

 

Take away the reward for success and no one will bother to succeed. Without successful wage payers there can be no wage earners. This is why socialism and communism always fail.

Thank you,I didn't mean to raise your hackles, I am well aware of what Europeans think of Americans, I am European born and spent 2 1/2 years living and working there recently. The most recent equivalent of France's census has immigration from former French colonies in 2010 at over 7.2 million not including the estimated 700 to 800 k undocumented..........so yes there are 5'th and 6'th generation but also a significant %, some 11% are recent immigrants.

I am not French, but I lived there for a year and I have many good friends there. There are good people everywhere, and it sucks when they are stereotyped. No offense taken, I just think the French often get a bad rap.

I hear you....I love Paris and never had a single problem with the French regardless of their largely undeserved reputation for aloofness. My own people?.....more so.

According to the article this was a "one-off" levy, not a continuous rate, but I bet it's still going to drive those with resources and mobility out of France.

.....that is the exact reason I shop at Marche Atwater in Montreal....Even Murry's in the city cannot replicate the complex waft of an aged whole milk Camembert or Livarot.

REad the article, it only reached that level due to a one time assessment. What the actual ongoing rate would be, who knows. Last I heard discussed was 75%, but I also recall the uproar that caused, and the article seems to imply that wasn't what was actually done. They just say a small number of households were taxed at 100% or over, and a larger number at over 75%.

 So far, IIRC, Their former president has renounced his citizenship and moved to Switzerland (?) and Gerard DePardieu has become a Russian  Citizen because of the tax situation in France.

According to a Forbes article more almost 1800 in the first 3 quarters of 2012,690 in the first 90 days of 2013, it has caught the eye of our fine politicians who want a way to tax Americans even after they renounce their citernship.

Facebook co founder Saverin moved to Singapore,Denice Rich,Tina Turner,Isebella Getty just to name a few. It was even hinted that newest Tumblr millionaire David Karp was anticipating a move to Singapore after sealing the sale to Yahoo.
