Handgun Hunting... Where and How?

Recommended Posts

Never really been interested in hunting.  No problem with it, just no real interest.  That's changed.  However as with most things I would like to do it my way.  I am interested in hunting with a handgun.  Specifically deer or hog using a .357 revolver.  I am assuming that it's not an option here in NJ so I'm wondering where I can do it and how I go about getting licenses and/or permits?  I don't need super specific information (unless you have it handy) but generally what states might allow it and any online references anyone might have available.

Thanks in advance.

Christopher

I'd take a deer with a .357 mag in a revolver....not a great distances though.

I personally wouldn't go after a hog with something that light though.

My dad's go-to is a .41 mag. I've seen that thing take down just about everything in the WV woods.

WV does allow pistol hunting....but there is limited hog hunting, only in the southern counties.

Just Google the DEP F&W websites for the respective states you are interested in. Many allow handgun hunting. I've taken a handgun to PA, VT & ME. Just pass the NJ general Hunter Safety course to get your certificate and you can legally buy a hunting license in any of the states.

I used to hunt groundhogs with a handgun. When I hunted with my father (with him using a rifle), anything under 200 yards was mine, anything over was his.

You used to be able to get a 3-day non-resident license from PA (for varmints and small game) for about $15. Don't know if they still do that or not.

Adios,

I hunt hogs (Russian boars) and wouldn't use anything smaller than .44 mag.  I shot one last year that was 350 lbs.  Most southern states allow handgun hunting for deer and hogs.

Would love to see some pics of your hunt !! Did it eat good that big ?  Where do you hunt wild ( Russian boars ) ? Thanks

My PA Pig (Sow) weighed-in at 239 pounds "on-the-hook", after both field dressing AND skinning.  Filled the two freezers I have!  62 pounds of smoked pork products (chops, hams and a ton of bacon) and countless fresh hams, pork chops, pork roasts, etc.

Used a 167 year-old model of a .44 Cap-N-Ball Colt Revolver with a 225 grain soft lead conical that started to open-up upon impact.  One shot stop and never did find the slug, lol!
