UH oh. Problems with my AR-Any smiths in East Brunwsick Area?

Recommended Posts

Well, I put a shorty ace skeelton stock wqith dpms spacer on my AR.  Not the most mechanically inclined guy around.

Put about 50 rouns thru it yesterday with no issue, then wouldnt fire.

Tried taking it apart today and cant remove lower.

Seems like buffer spring is hung up in it some how.  Stock spacer starting to move so looks like that came loose too.

I def need some help with this.

Anyone point me in the right direction?

the part of the spacer at the front, or the cylindrical part at the rear is what's moving. This is not a setup I would personally recommend. but it is entirely possible you didn't torque the tube enough, and it backed out of the lower, releasing the buffer retaining pin so that your buffer and the pin (or pieces thereof) are no inside the upper receiver where they shouldn't be.

If the bolt moves, you can pop the take down pin out, and try slowly working the charging handle back until things like up right to separate the upper and lower.

Did you follow all the installation steps? Quick video I found of what sounds like your set-up....

When you say can't remove the lower, do you mean you can't move the takedown pin?

Ok, GOT IT.

Of course i cant find retainer pin and spring.

Looks like the buffer tube came lose and bolt was not going all the way forward and was stuck where tube inserts.

Guess I should use some loctite next time or have a pro do it.

Think I am just going to bring it in or have done by somoene who knows a lot more then me.

Any reco's in my area?

I dont think EB sportsmen handles this.

Sounds like this to me.

Can you just take the stock off, pull out the spring and retrieve the buffer?

Yes. Bolt full back. Can keep it back.

Can pull rear pin out almost all the way, but upper will not come off.

I am thinking this is beyond my ability

Pull both pins, takedown and pivot.(only pull them until they stop, you don't want them to come all the way out). Then see if the lower will seperate.

If Henry is still at eb sportsman, I'm sure he could do it for you.

E Brunswick is a bit of a hike, otherwise I'd be glad to lend a hand.

If you decide to tackle the reassembly & such yourself, remember: a little loctite goes a LONG way!

Don't overdo it, or you'll be heating your lower with a damn torch the next time you swap stocks.

Ask me how I know :(

Good luck, my vote is DIY, best way to know your rifle inside/out

so stock came loose... and the pin and spring interfered with the gun cycling.... where did the spring and pin go?

I had this stock before and I do not remember loctiting anything..

I loctite almost all my screws and threaded parts on my ar's (sights, rails on the handguard, castle nut, a2 tube screw, etc). I also don't hammer the endplates into the castle nut. Forget the actual term for it lol

OP I've had good luck with midway lately and I believe they have a $10 off sale atm

I usually hit it with a couple dots of vibratite.

Its not that I'm proud or not. The reason for staking the endplate is to make sure the castle nut doesn't wiggle off. This can also be accomplished with a little bit of blue loctite. Hasnt come off yet.
