Yes, moisture is attracted to cool dark spaces like safes.  A coating of RemOil or similar on the sporting arm helps to  displace water and lubricate.

I have several LARGE safes and I use the following in all of them:

PEET electric DeHumidifier in the rear corner :

This actually circulates the air and warm the the ambient temp to approx. 70-75 degrees

Look here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Peet-M10-SafeKeeping-Dryer-Safe-Electric-Dehumidifier-/190859897434?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c7022ea5a

Stack on (Eva-Dry, Remington, ect.) silica dehumidifier:

This is mounted to the side of the upper section. this are filled with silica gel (beads) that

absorb excess moisture that can accumulate from opening & closing the save when either

the heat or AC is on in the room. Theu ca nthen be pluged into an outlet which activates a

built-in dryer that dissipates the moisture from the silica beads - then you put it back into the safe.

Look here:http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVA-DRY-E-333-Gun-Safe-Dehumidifier-ammo-vault-gun-locker-closet-dryer-/140986420591?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20d3720d6f

I also use a humidity gauge to monitor that the levels are low. Usually around 40-45% is perfect.

Good luck!

JT

I believe Eva-Dry is the original brand and the others are rebranded.  They're great but only work with slight humidity.  I put a bunch of them in an off-site cabinet and got surface rust after a few months.  Climate control in the building is the most important thing, dessiccants and heat sticks are secondary.

Do you use silicon spray and/or gun socks within the safe/cabinet?

Do you use the A/C non-stop or open your windows when the temperature permits?  Night air can be very cool (and airs out a stuffy house that runs A/C all day) but it can also be very humid.  Enough to make my wood furniture swell! (real furniture, not ifle stocks)

I have "DampRid" in the walk in closet hanging and "Eva-Dry 300" in the safe just in case.  There is moisture being captured for sure on both.  I highly recommend these products.

sporting arms?  sorry, not following

It is a bad habbit to call your guns weapons, it can land you in jail.. They are sporting arms or firearms in the civilian world. You never want to tell a figure of authority you have a weapon so it is very good practice to call them sporting arms..

I use Eva-dry in the basement safe. I check on it every week or two to recharge it when it fills up. I also check my firearms every few weeks just to check to make sure no rust is building up on the ones I don't use frequently. Gun socks and a protective coat of oil or wipe down with a silicone cloth. Perhaps it is overkill, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I agree I do exactly this.

Up for trade is a heavy solid lockbox for larger suv vehicles to secure firearms, tools or other valuables from being stolen. This is I believe 3/4”‘plywood, it is solid and heavy. The locks is a mechanical simplex lock. It will not fail from lack of batteries or computer failure. The Combination and key need to be set by a locksmith. Measurements are 4 feet wide x 20 inches tall x 40 inches deep. Looking to trade for a firearm or related accessories.

For those who think going high tech is the way to go with gun safes.  Beware.

Just a head's up, the recent BJ's sales circular (5/23 - 6/19) is advertising an "Extreme Savings Week" sale June 12 - 18.
One of the items on sale is a Snap-on 24 gun safe for $299.99.
It's a decent 30 minute fireproof safe typically selling at places like Dicks, TSC, or the box stores for $5-600.
I have no interest in BJ's nor Snap-on Safe's, just saw this as a nice deal and thought I'd pass it on.
Remember, there's no sales tax on gun safes

I checked my safe and noticed that the humidity level was low (~30%). I have a Goldenrod Dehumidifier in it. Should I be turning this off during the dryer winter months?

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
    • I get the added benefit that since I have a TSP rather than a true 401(k) they tax my retirement too. Yaaaay!
