Stackz73 0 Posted July 21, 2013 Not trying to spend anything crazy but I wanna get one for home defense and I've never purchased one before. Any ideas?
Underdog 1,593 Posted July 21, 2013 Mossberg 500 w/ an 18"-20" barrel. The standard is 12 gauge and it has superior versatility, but you might find this interesting... Consider the 20-gauge shotgun by Massad AyoobA Remington 870 and an Ithaca 37 pump action would also be a nice choice. Some people believe that a semi-auto shotgun might be better for someone not particularly familiar with a shotgun. You want a short-barrelled, typically short-stocked one and you might want to mount something to it that holds extra shotgun shells and put a light on it. A shiny bead or one with night vision capabilities might also be nice.
mge_1 2 Posted July 21, 2013 I picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88. But that 500 is nice as well!

jm1827 284 Posted July 21, 2013 Remington 870 18 1/2 barrel ^^^^ This- my first gun, which I still have. A 50 year old 870 that still functions flawlessly, even after MANY thousands of rounds down the tube!
Underdog 1,593 Posted July 22, 2013 I picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88. But that 500 is nice as well! I like the safety location on the 500 better than the Maverick..

Malice4you 627 Posted July 22, 2013 Benelli Supernova is what I've got... Benelli Nova Tactical Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590 are also good pumps... Go to a store and fondle all of them and see what fits you best... What works for me might not work for everyone...

StephanieSeven 70 Posted July 27, 2013 Mossberg 500 w/ an 18"-20" barrel. The standard is 12 gauge and it has superior versatility, but you might find this interesting... Consider the 20-gauge shotgun by Massad Ayoob I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. If I could go back I would've gotten the 20 gauge. Only issue I've heard with them is sometimes the actual switch for the safety will break and needs to be replaced. Easy enough to replace. Overall I'm happy with it. AlDente67 563 Posted August 15, 2013 My Mossy 500 is fun to shoot. Simple but fun (until I add on lights and whatnot). I chose it for the short barrel. The semi-auto is what I really wanted, but too rich for my budget at the time ($500 versus $800++). All of the others in stock were long barrel models plus a few really expensive Benellis. My last purchase was a Hatsan Escort tactical (scary black) 12 gauge which I haven't tried yet. Turkish make. Quad rail, various brakes included. Similar price range. I'll add a write-up when I get a chance to fire some 00 buck through it. If you don't hear from me, the test did not go well, and please send flowers. illy 1 Posted August 15, 2013 Maverick 88 in 20ga 24" bbl was the first shotgun I bought. I went w/ that because it doubles as (ie is mostly used for) bird hunting (turkey/upland game).
tony357 386 Posted August 15, 2013 Home defense The 870 It has a much smoother pump action over the Mosberg models..
BobZ 0 Posted August 16, 2013 Don't buy cheap. Theres no reason a good shotgun can't last for many years. Buy a good one.

gleninjersey 2,139 Posted August 18, 2013 Go to the next "Shotgun Sho0tout" and try out a few different guns (will prob be a few 20 gauges and plenty of 12 gauges) .....and learn how to shoot clays! See the "Meet Up/Events" links for pics from the last one (or click the link below) and to keep an eye out for the date for next month's meet up. http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/58914-shotgun-shootout-august-11th-at-clinton-nj-wma/
