What's a good 1st shotgun? (Home Defense)

Mossberg 500 w/ an 18"-20" barrel.  The standard is 12 gauge and it has superior versatility, but you might find this interesting...

A Remington 870 and an Ithaca 37 pump action would also be a nice choice.  Some people believe that  a semi-auto shotgun might be better for someone not particularly familiar with a shotgun.  You want a short-barrelled, typically short-stocked one and you might want to mount something to it that holds extra shotgun shells and put a light on it.  A shiny bead or one with night vision capabilities might also be nice.

Remington 870 18 1/2 barrel

^^^^ This- my first gun, which I still have.  A 50 year old 870 that still functions flawlessly, even after MANY thousands of rounds down the tube!

I picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88.  But that 500 is nice as well!

I like the safety location on the 500 better than the Maverick..

I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge.  If I could go back I would've gotten the 20 gauge.   Only issue I've heard with them is sometimes the actual switch for the safety will break and needs to be replaced.  Easy enough to replace.  Overall I'm happy with it.

My Mossy 500 is fun to shoot.  Simple but fun (until I add on lights and whatnot).  I chose it for the short barrel.

The semi-auto is what I really wanted, but too rich for my budget at the time ($500 versus $800++).  All of the others in stock were long barrel models plus a few really expensive Benellis.

My last purchase was a Hatsan Escort tactical (scary black) 12 gauge which I haven't tried yet.  Turkish make.  Quad rail, various brakes included.  Similar price range.  I'll add a write-up when I get a chance to fire some 00 buck through it.  If you don't hear from me, the test did not go well, and please send flowers.

Go to the next "Shotgun Sho0tout" and try out a few different guns (will prob be a few 20 gauges and plenty of 12 gauges) .....and learn how to shoot clays!  See the "Meet Up/Events" links for pics from the last one (or click the link below) and to keep an eye out for the date for next month's meet up.
