Just applied for my FID and pistol permit

Well I took the first step and applied for my FID card. I never thought I would, but i did. Hopefully all will work out. I've really never been interested in firearms, most likely because I never knew anyone who had one. But after meeting a few people who enjoy them it sounds interesting. But my main reason for wanting a firearm is simple. It may not make sense to some people but it makes sense to me. I am concerned that we are slowly loosing our rights. So with that said, I am exercising my 2nd amendment right.

 

I keep hearing that In NJ it can be difficult and long wait to get approved for a permit. Hopefully it won't be too bad. One of my references whom I added on my application has already received a question sheet about me. I have an appointment next week to get fingerprinted.

 

I will most likely start of with a .22 caliber pistol. I'm sure I will have lots of time to think about it, so any suggestions would be great.

Welcome. Depending on where you are located and which PD you went to, it can take anywhere from 30 days to 6-8 months to get you FPID card back. If you are going to buy a pistol you are also going to need a Permit to Purchase a Handgun. If you didn't request one at the same time as you FPID you will have to go through pretty much the whole process again to get the P2P.

 

As far as suggestions for a pistol we would need to know more about what you want to do with it. Target shooting, competition shooting, or home defense.

Welcome.  As others said you want to apply for the p2p at the same time.  IF you did not, go back and have them amend the form.  Further, even though you want one .22 cal pistol I would advice you get four permits - they only cost $2/ea.  You will likely find this addictive and want to buy more toys very soon.

IMHO, if you want one pistol, apply for three permits.  It's amazing how they grow.

Thank you. I'm in Hillsborough, Somerset county. Pretty much looking for target shooting, and tinkering. My mom has a house in the Poconos. I most likely will be using it there. I wanted a .22 because it would be my first pistol.  Plus, I found a few hundred  .22 bullets that my step dad left. I also found his old jennings j-22 pistol. It was in rough shape. I don't want it, and my mother doesn't want either. So I will probably get something for it at a gun buy back program. I will obviously wait until i get my permit before I take it off her hands. I'm placing a budget of $550 (pistol and locking case) I am however open to a .40. I just didn't want to spend a lot being it would be my first pistol.

I did request a pistol permit. It was one application. I checked of the box for pistol. I only requested. I didn't know any better. 6-8 months, that would suck. I remember reading someplace that NJ law states 30 days to get your permit. So much for getting my hopes up for having it in 30 days.

I knew I screwed up something. I only asked for 1 pistol permit. So, I would have to wait again should I want to get a larger pistol.

However, the gun alone will cost you $550 if you are lucky and the conversion kit another $200 more.

 

My suggestion would be to look into a dedicated .22 LR pistol.

 

The Beretta NEOS is an excellent gun for about $300.

 

If you are into revolvers, take a look at the Ruger SP-101 in .22LR.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did look look at the Glock. I know it's not the same as an airsoft Glock, but my kid has an airsoft pistol that looks just like a Glock and I really like how it feels. If I could get a Glock that can be converted to .22 to save on ammo that would be perfect. I was wondering what the .22LR conversion was for, now I know. I also looked at the Neos, I did look at that one too. It's pretty cool that out of the 3 pistols you recommended I was seriously considering 2 of them.

 

One question if I go the Glock 22 route and get the .22LR conversion kit, will I still be able to use .40 ammo? It's not a permanent conversion is it.?

Nope, It's a drop in conversion.  You take the .40 caliber slide off and pop on the .22LR slide.  I have one for my Beretta 92FS.

Awesome, that was what I was hoping. Thank you there, brother. Looks like the Glock and the .22 conversion will be the route I will take. It's a little more than I wanted to spend but in the long run i will be saving some cash by using .22 ammo. Plus, if I wanted to try out some .40 ammo the switch over can be done easily, as I mentioned earlier I found a few hundred .22 ammo from when my step dad was around,

Well, I got finger printed on Tuesday. It was quick and easy. So I guess the long wait begins. I can't say I'm interested at how long the wait will be, but at least it will give me some time to save up enough cash to buy something nice.

Yeah, that's what I keep hearing. It's really hard to stay positive when I hear how tough NJ is in regards to firearm rights.

I feel that every good law abiding citizen should have better access to firearms. After all it's our constitutional right. However, so many bad people have ruined that for the good people.  I'm hearing from some people that the wait could be long and it's simply at random.

Thank you to all for the kind welcome. Well, guess what,........after a 42 day wait, I received a call from my PD. Yup, to my surprise my FID and pistol permit was ready for pick up. That was quick, I heard from some people I know that the wait will be 3 months but can be 6 to 8 months. Well, I guess I got lucky, short wait.

Is it possible that some State police barracks take longer to process FID cards than say local township police departments. If so, that's a little odd considering local Pd send out info about the applicant to the State Pd. Unless its because state police have more paperwork that local PD.

 

I'm getting ready to apply for additional pistol permits. I'm so stupid, I only requested one pistol purchasing permit. I guess I have to do the paper work all over again. I hope the wait is not too long since I already have my FID.

by the way....buy your handgun online....lotta local shops and want adds ask to much for used guns!.....buy new online!! and pay the transfer fees! dont deal locally unless its cheap or a good deal....i buy my ammo online...they claimed ammo shortage! bull!.....online you can buy 3000 rounds or more cheap! ps i wouldnt bother with a 22....i'd at leaste buy a 9mm..my wife has one if she can handle it so can you!

You're correct about all of the above. But you made the same mistake I did when I applied for the first time. The Sgt. asked, "You only want one permit?" and like an idiot I said, "Well yeah!" He kind of shrugged. But before I knew it...

 

The only other thing I could comment on is the fact you said "pistol." I'm a revolver guy, partial to wheel guns. .22 caliber revolvers are about as much fun as you can have on the range. 

 

More advice: Hang out here, maybe even go to the NY or PA forum, and watch YouTube videos! There is tons of gun-related content, much of very high quality.
