pistol shooting question

Recommended Posts

I'm 19 and i have my gun ID for rifles and shotguns but not pistols. My uncle has a 22. pistol that I shot and it was a lot of fun. I really want to get started in shooting pistols. He offered me to take it home and shoot it all i want. i'm not buying the gun thought. he just keeping it at my house for me to shoot and learn.(I didnt take the gun yet)  what would happen if a cop showed up and i'm shooting his gun?. also I shoot my shotgun, .22s, and my 9mm rifle in my backyard range a lot. I've also had friends come over with louder guns like a .45  I never had the cops come..

I told my dad last night to get his pistol id so i could get a ruger sr22. for my birthday.. but until then would it be okay to shoot my uncle pistol with him not around.

Also a straw purchase.  You have to wait a couple more years bud.

Welcome to our wonderful sport!

It's been said already (wait for the clock to strike 21), so I'll just say that you should have someone over 21 if any hand guns are present, and the owner of said hand gun should be there.  In the PRofNJ there isn't any such thing as the common-sense "loaning" of a mere .22 to plink with....you have to go to America to find THAT!

In the meantime, enjoy your long guns and don't risk losing your NJ FID Card!

If the uncle lives in NJ and goes with you to the range, he could let you use it. If the Uncle is out of state, then the pistol is best left out of state. You could go visit him, then the laws of that state apply. However, you would be a non-resident so be careful here.

If dad gets his FID and purchases a SR22, goes with you to the range and let's you shoot it, that's OK.

All other cases of you using a pistol at this point in a word, NO.

If when you turn 21, get a P2P and dad transfers it to you, OK. Same if Uncle is in NJ, P2P to you OK. It Uncle is out of state then transfer would need to go through NJ FFL to you. Only if NJ FFL accepts transfers from Uncle directly, otherwise need Uncle to transfer to out of state FFL to NJ FFL, to you.

Sucks doesn't it. Your only 19, get out of NJ now! Federal laws restrict pistol purchases from FFLs to people 21 or older. Some states allow transfer to 18-21 year olds, if person to person.

T Bill,

I just remembered something and it may help our young shooter!  There is at least one other exception:  A NRA sanctioned Youth competition, where kids use a club member's hand gun.  At my club, we have a Youth Bullseye League.  Kids are taught marksmanship with .22 Rugers that belong to our members.  It's not an illegal transfer due to every member of the club being registered with NJSP as a club member.  Also--mandatory adult supervision with the gun's owner being present at all times.  So the Kid's dad or uncle need not be present.  Mom can bring the kid(s) for Youth Bullseye League, and Mom or Dad doesn't even have to be a member of the club!  Or a NJFID holder!  We have 12 year olds in the League who demonstrate good listening skills and are mature-minded.  So if Steven wants to shoot in a Youth League run by a club in such a way as to enable him to do so, he can get in his vehicle and drive there himself--he just CAN NOT bring his Uncle's gun with him (or anybody else's for that matter).

I'm only posting this in an attempt to keep Steven on the straight and narrow, and to show him a way to shoot hand guns without owning one himself.

Note to Steven:  Most clubs will want a parent or guardian to sign a liability waiver in order for the club members to teach you with their guns.  So have this person show-up to do the paperwork, and make all arrangements ahead of time so you being there isn't a complete surprise!  I don't know about all clubs, but our's sponsors most of the ammo expense.  If you go to the ANJR and PC's web site you 'll be able to find info about "Member Clubs", along with contact info for each.  Ask some if they sponsor a Youth Bullseye League and keep calling until you find one that "fits" for you.

Hope I've been helpful!

Dave

My club does it with long guns for minors.  At the moment, I know of no clubs in the area that are doing it with handguns for anybody.

Remember he is not a minor anymore.  If he has someone willing to take him to the range and stay with him that is 21 or older that is OK too!

Again, bravo sierra with these laws.  Vote, Enter into a contract, marry, die for your country - 18.  Smoke, drink, own a handgun, Oh your not responsible enough - 21.

Hey politicians, pick an age and stick to it OK?

If Steven can enter into a legal contract at 18, he may not even need anyone over 21 to be there.  He could just drive himself there with his driver's license as photo ID to prove his age, address, etc., sign the waiver, and be escorted into the range for instruction on a member's hand gun.  After-all, he's not leaving with a hand gun--merely using one under the proper exemptions and exceptions our screwed-up laws allow....  the same exceptions and exemptions the club uses for Women On Target, where we allow young girls who are "mature enough" to be taught how to use several types of hand guns (although a parent or guardian has to sign the waiver AND be present).

Take care Bill!
