Shotguns: Single-Shot or Pump-Action?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am in the market for a slug gun for use this deer season (hopefully), and would like some opinions.

Right now I am down to deciding between these two, which are where my budget is at:

Mossberg 500 Slugster: http://www.mossberg.com/product/shotguns-pump-action-500-slugster/52273?u_field_prod_sight_type=Integral+Scope-Base+Cantilever@220&nodeRef=2330,2331,2333,2335,2336&redirect=1&filterNodes=2333,2335

H&R  Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe: http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/default.aspx?item=sb2-988

I was just wondering if there are any pros/cons that I haven't yet considered in using a single-shot for hunting and would appreciate some input from veteran hunters.

Thanks,

Dan

H&r all day. I have a 20ga ultra slug hunter and its a TACK driver out to 100 yards. If your looking for a dedicated slug gun I don't think you will find much better especially considering the price of them.

Thank you for the input!! So, 20 ga is good enough for deer? I was on the fence about this too. This would be a gun I might like to eventually pass down to one of my kids, so that is a consideration as well.

I should also add, in all my years of hunting I have never got more then one shot off other then drives with buckshot. As with anything else, shot placement is key.

If you plan on deer hunting with a club that does drives, you wouldn't want either of those.  You would need a good repeating shotgun that shoots 12 gauge buckshot well.

You should really base your shotgun off the land you intend on hunting. If you're in thick cover with shorter(40yds and closer) shots, go with the Mossberg 500 and buckshot. If you're planning on reaching out a bit further, you simply can't beat the value of the H&R USH. Also, as a VERY proud owner of a 12ga USH, buy the 20ga instead. I wish I did, but I'm too stubborn to sell my 12 and replace it now.

Remember, though, that NJ's hunting regs require rifle sights on your shotgun if you're shooting slugs.

This. Unless you have a rear sight or a scope on that double-barrel, it is not legal in NJ.

Ultra Slug Hunter deluxe in 20GA.... GREAT gun.  I've taken deer at 130 yrds with it and it's incredibly accurate.  I've read reports of people being accurate with them out to almost 200 yrds!  Just throw a decent slug gun scope on it and you're good to go.

Looking to sell my Beretta 1301 Tac. Black, standard stock, extended factory 7 round magazine, WITH replaceable chokes. Gun is like new, with all original packaging, paperwork, and accessories. Has been fired less than 250 rounds, and is in perfect shape. 7+1 round model, made NJ compliant with a 2 round limiter. I bought this gun brand new less than a month ago. I’ll include a Beretta hard plastic, foam lined gun case. I have a 1301 comp incoming, and while I would love to keep the tac, it’s just not practical, so I am letting it go.

Located in 08724, will travel to a ffl for transfer within a reasonable distance. Would prefer not to deal with shipping.
Please, serious buyers only. Ask any questions and I’ll answer them asap!

Hey everyone,  I'm a new gun owner and I love the gun community!  What I don't love is NJ and their ambiguous and backwards gun laws.  I wanted to get a pump action bullpup shotgun and was looking at the Kel Tec KS7 and KSG.  While trying to compare them with other brands I found it was almost impossible to find a list of pump action bullpup shotguns for around $1,000 or less.  Does anyone have any good recommendations besides the black aces tactical?  Thank you in advance for your time and help.  Have a great memorial day and God bless those who lost their loves making the ultimate sacrifice

    • Agreed, but it has been sold......
    • Have you done any research into the cost and licensing requirements to run a repeater? We own some mountainous acreage in a very rural part of Virginia RIdge and Valley country that serves as vacation place and potential SHTF retreat. We get mediocre cell phone coverage (US Cellular only) and nothing else. I have thought of putting an antenna tower up the hill a ways (we own nearly to the top of the ridge. I wouldn't do it just for Ham or GMRS radio, but if I could get expanded cell coverage, and/or satellite internet (Dish or Starlink) as well, from one tower, I might go for it. ==== sorry, didn't  intend to hijack the thread ====
    • The biggest problem with this announcement is that the FBI has proven itself to be completely untrustworthy, but it is the agency charged with keeping the public informed about such developments. So, this is something that Wray and the FBI want us to believe, because they are convinced that is in their best interests that we do so. But how much objective truth is there to it? Are Biden's enviro-Nazi puppeteers planning to sabotage the internet and what is left of our petrochemical production capability and somehow false flag attribute that attack to the Chinese? Unlikely, but it's terrible and damning that I even need to seriously consider that possibility. It's a dilemma. Reminds me of an old Star Trek TV episode where Kirk short-circuits some robotic adversary by telling it, "I always lie. Listen very carefully. I am lying to you..." Personally, I'll wait until I see some corroboration of this from something that I regard as a trusted source (and those are few and far between these days) before I buy it.
