Gamo Air rifle bone collector

Recommended Posts

Well with the new season added for air rifles I decided to buy one. Wanted to share my experience to help any new to this as i am. I bought a gamo bone collector and am so disapointed. Unlike other states where big stores like gander and cabelas take returns here in nj you don't have that option. My rifle after 500 rds, and multiple pellets i can't hold a group at 15 yds. Ive contacted gamo and they are very very unwilling to help the customer. They will suggest fixes and additional items to buy to correct issues with the rifle but not the issues themselves. Ive dumped 400 bucks into this and every new pellet or the new scope I got just left me feeling deflated since I could have bought a .17 or 22

I just shot a benjimin new out of the box and it is dead on at 20 yds. So if you decide to venture into the nj air rifle season head the warning... I will never buy gamo again. It seems the guns are designed for kids to shoot cans at 1300 fps.. Not take game. This is the second gamo I've shot with issues. So if you get into it this year good luck and shop wise. Look into a company that will work with you or go to gander where they take returns.

That really sucks. It's one thing to have an issue with something but bad customer service makes it so much worse.

I got a Beeman pellet rifle .177 like 2 or 3 years ago. I shot cans and whatnot and took care of a groundhog family that took over underneath my shed. It was like $130 and it shot awesome, a usual grouping was about a silver dollar at 25yds. I sold it cause it got boring after a while but now that I think about it, I may get another one for this new hunting season.

I'd throw it up on the marketplace for cheap and see if someone wants to tinker with it. Then use the money to buy another one, less priced if I were you. $400 just seems like so much money for a rifle shooting a pellet. My Beeman was nice and had pretty wood and my buddy and his dad just got two RWS' and that thing shoots incredible groupings at 25-50yds if there is no wind out. I think they got both of them for 200 bucks each.

From my experience springers are more hold sensitive then PCP.

Beeman or RWS would be my top choices but they don't come cheap anymore. PCP Benjamin Marauder. For a good website with reviews and articles go to straightshooters.com. You will easily see how expensive some of these rifles are.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with it.  I have several Gamo air rifles over the years and they have been darn good for the most part.....trigger being the biggest issue.

Typically accuracy can be affected by these:

type/brand/weight of pellet

loose screw connection between the receiver action and stock

scope/mount creep

spring powered air gun quality scope

Worst case scenario is that you have a cut piston seal.  Its not unheard of since it can happen upon assembly as there are a fair amount of sharp edges on the chamber tube.  It can play havoc with velocity consistency and result in poor accuracy also.  If you know anyone with a chronograph you could run a string of shots to check to see how consistent the velocity is.

I'd recommend the Ruger Airhawk .17. It's an awesome air rifle. It's dead on accurate with less then ideal pellets. The trigger is 2 stage, very crisp and predictable. The scope it came with is alright but I'd recommend swapping it out for something better since this rifle has a ton of kick. Best of all- it's very inexpensive at $117 from amazon(obviously can't have it shipped to NJ but if you have a friend or family in PA you can just drive it over).

I also have the Ruger blackhawk and while it's also a good rifle- I think they are made to different specs. The trigger is much better on the airhawk(2 stage on airhawk, single on blackhawk) and the wood stock does make the rifle feel much better. My blackhawk also has a ton of barrel droop which the scope can't adjust for. I essentially have to aim WAY high with the blackhawk. It's why I went and got the airhawk since no matter what I couldn't correct the blackhawk at all. I'm sure I just got a bad blackhawk but since it's NJ, like you I ran into the same problems about returning. Now I just use my blackhawk for shits and giggles experiments like how a certain pellets deform hitting a bucket of water without worrying the water gets all over my airhawk.

Disclaimer is that it's not made by Ruger but licensed out to a Chinese company. Regardless, it's made to Ruger quality. I only recommend you take the stock off, apply some good oil where needed and make sure the screws are nice and tight. If you do only that you will have a wonderful air rifle that will last a long time. This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Mil-dot-Scope-Airgun-Pre-adjusted/dp/B003BONFGI/ref=pd_sbs_sg_6

You'll also need a weaver rail: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CJ67E6/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'd also recommend getting one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Z4JGL8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It helps a ton in loading time. Without it, you typically reach into your canteen, inspect the pellet, orient it then load it. This pretty much makes the loading procedure 1/4 the time allowing for followup shots.

Airgun Depot is having a sale on RWS scopes. I have this one:

http://tinyurl.com/op9araf

On sale for $85 and worth every penny. Made specifically for springers, and has parallex adj for usual (shorter) pellet rifle range.

Then get this mount:

http://www.airgundepot.com/rws-lock-down-scope-mount-1-inch.html

I have this combination on my RWS after having gone through 2 other .22 scopes and trying everyting else to keep the scope from creeping. Springers recoil in both directions, and are hell on scopes not designed for that sort of abuse.

BTW etos - that mount is also pre-adjusted for "droop"

Nice looking scope, the 30 day warranty scares me a bit though.

Yeah springers are hell on scopes. The weaver rings my scope came with is textured so even having the rings really loose still requires quite a bit of force to move the scope.

That is definitely a nice looking scope. Comes down to what you're willing to pay. When I ordered my scope it wasn't $50, it was $30 and that was my price target. The only problem I get is the weaver rail screws coming loose and getting scope creep that way. I should just get some locktite and it'll fix that pretty easily.

My blackhawk is a serious defect rifle. When I say massive barrel droop, I mean outstandingly massive. Like I have to aim 2 yards up from 20 yards on iron sights set to the highest setting. I don't believe there is a seal issue since the power is the same as my airhawk(shot a phone book with both at 30 yards, pellets went in the same distance). Again it doesn't really matter since I have the airhawk now which IMO waaaaaaaaay worth the extra $17 for 2 stage trigger and solid wooden stock.
