TRENTON — A state policy to report information on lost, stolen and discarded guns to federal databases has been made permanent.

Gov. Chris Christie today signed a measure (A3797) that makes the existing state guidelines a state law The bill signing comes a month after Christie conditionally vetoed an earlier version to remove a requirement that the state publish gun trace data from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Christie said he removed the ATF data provision because it would have violated federal law.

Both houses of the Legislature quickly agreed with Christie’s proposed changes last week.

“I’m glad the Legislature acted swiftly to incorporate my common sense changes so that I can sign this bill and responsibly strengthen New Jersey’s already-tough gun laws,” Christie said in a statement. “This new law will help state and federal law enforcement officials stop guns from getting into the hands of criminals, and help maintain public safety.”
