Interested in building 1st AR

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of building my first AR and I am looking for some input. I'm a newbie to rifles but I would like to attempt to build a nice AR. My budget would be 1500.00 in gun not including optics. I'm only looking for one black gun so I'd like to do it right. I'm not sure if I should consider a .308 over a 5.56. Any and all input is welcome. Thank You in Advance!

That is a big thread with a lot of info.  If you have any specific questions feel free to post them.  We have a lot of knowledgeable members here.

As for .308 vs 5.56, I guess it depends what you plan on doing with it, or how far you plan to shoot it.  I would say anything inside of 300 yds go with 5.56

556 a lot more options, and you can EASILY get in for under 1500.

AR's are broken down into Lowers and Uppers.

Lower (Lower Receiver, stock, trigger components, grips)

Upper (Upper Receiver, Barrel, Handguards, BCG, etc.)

You can buy either stripped or complete.

My first AR, I bought a stripped lower, and added all the components, and purchased a complete upper receiver I just put on from White Oak Armament.

My second AR, I built ground up, and had upper receiver assembled by PK90.

Plenty of options.  Check out the AR thread for pictures. =)

Also, www.aimsurplus.com, is great for complete uppers.

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't reload yet, it is something I have been thinking about but to be honest I really don't have much time. So I will start looking at uppers and lowers and see what I can put together but it looks looks like 556 for me. Thanks Again!
