Anti family members

Recommended Posts

My brother in laws brother is constantly posting things about how awful guns are. Just read this extremely long article about kids shooting themselves with guns found around this house. I of course counter this by posting every good article about guns lol. He's just one of those people that are anti America. Anyone else have People like this in their family? And if so how do you handle this?

My parents are anti. Which is why I currently don't own any guns.

A lot of anti-gun people are stubbornly anti gun. Not much can change their minds, and it really isn't worth trying, especially when there's the risk of family tensions. Politics and family is often not a good mixture.

My brother's wife is a self-proclaimed Socialist.  When she found out that I keep guns in the house, she flipped out and has never come back since.  It's been over 3 years now.  Life is good.

Offer to take them to the range, and leave the politics out of it if you can. Honestly, actions are far better than words. You can argue all you like with every well sourced fact in the book, but some people are just so ingrained in that anti-gun fear that you won't make a single dent. It isn't worth the frustration unless you know that they'll actually LISTEN and do their own research without resorting to "muh 90%" and other such bs.

My very liberal brother in Norway....absorbs every anti American/anti firearm article, television show he can access and throws it back to me on FB.Ironically he was trained as a NATO forces sniper but couldn't hit the side of a barn when he was a boy.......Rather reflects the state of Norwegian commitment to NATO I should think.

Just to piss him off I shipped 2 NJGF tee shirts to my nephews and he get steamed every time they wear them around him .He a great guy but I do so enjoy teasing him...... always have.

I've found that many anti-gun people become gun people after you take them to the range the first time. They just have no frame of reference when it come to safe recreational firearm experiences.  They become slightly less enthusiastic the second time you take them to the range and make them pay for all their own ammo, haha.

My bro is liberal and married a devout tree hugger. He has popped the "Who needs an AR-15" question on me before, but he and his wife have never turned down any venison that I have offered them.

You *need* an AR15 for precisely the same reason that Rosa Parks *needed* to sit in the front of the bus.

That always causes a huge fight with my anti-gun family and friends.  :-D

Your behavior and who you are as a person will go a long way in bringing anti's over.  If they know you personally, and you're an upstanding individual in your community, educated, not sloven or delinquent... those things go a long way and those actions refute nonsensical statements about irresponsibility and hatred.

Then you have the range, nothing changes a person like ACTUALLY shooting a firearm.

When I was younger I used to worry about offending people because I wear the 2A on my sleeve.  My Dad taught us three kids to shoot.  My Brother was a gun owner until his passing.  My Sister is somewhat complicated....she's a radical Lesbian, thinks the Republicans are out to screw everybody, but likes guns and the 2A, so go figure??????????

My extremely liberal Uncle who lived in DC and Chicago called me a right wing extremist because I owned a firearm. Offered to take him to the range and he blocked me on FB. Didnt lose much sleep over it because I don't really speak to that side of the family.

My father and I have a deal.

He doesn't bring up my love for guns.  I don't bring up his love for the Philadelphia Eagles.

But that being said, There are basically three types of anti-gun people.

#1. Social Identity

#2. The Misinformed

#3. The Ambivalent

You can change #2 and #3 by taking them to the range.  But people who are #1 are so ingrained in their thinking that... well, imagine if someone thought they would be able to change your opinion if they just sent you an article or took you to a rally, or had a victim of gun violence speak to you.

Does anybody on this board actually think someone can change their minds about firearms?  It's pretty much like that for the people who base their social identity around being anti-gun.  You just have to agree to disagree.

It is amazing how being the victim of a crime and change an anti's mind.

My girlfriend's good friend lives in a nice area in Atlantic Beach, FL. Both she and her husband are "mildly" anti-gun. They don't give me a hard time about carrying when I'm there, but they don't think people need to have guns.

Well, last week, my GF gets a call from her friend asking if I can take her to the range next time we come down.

She went outside that morning and found someone was in her vehicle and tossed the interior and stole some things. She was scared at the thought of coming outside with her 10 month old and finding the person in her vehicle. Now she'd like to go shooting.

Go figure.

In principle I agree %100 with you Don... However I just want to point out one thing...

Rosa Parks didn't sit in the front of the bus... She sat in the back in the "colored" section. When whites got on the bus and there were no more seats for "whites only", the bus driver demanded that she move from the "colored" seat so they could sit.

She refused to get up when her previously established right was being infringed by an overzealous and bigoted authority figure...

Sounds pretty familiar...

I would never take this a-hole to the range with me. We've talked about guns in the past and he just walks away when I've made a valid point. However I recently took a guy from Australia shooting. Lol I've never seen such joy on a mans face. He's kind of anti gun as is most of Australia. Let him fire all my hand guns. And my crossbow and bow. Pretty sure I left a good impression in this guy

When it comes to guns, all of them.

I'm going to have to have a very frank discussion with y father when he comes to stay with me in Florida in December. He's going to need to deal with the fact that I carry 99% of time.

He's odd when it comes to guns tho. Def does not believe people shouldn't own them or govt should ban them. He is a realist and is fully aware what that leads to. He just hates them. Hates that I own the too. I don't think he'd hate if I used one to stop someone harming him his wife or my sisters tho.

My heart is actually broken right now for this very reason. My daughter has been the light of my life since the moment she was born. I never have loved anything as much as I love her. And she loves everything I love (Star Wars, LOTR, played travel soccer, played ice hockey, is an amazing musician and actually get decent cash paying gigs with an acoustic act she's put together). Well this "really cool" teacher in her high school that she idolizes is a big Obama supporter, against hunting and big anti gun person. And now all of a sudden I'm some ignorant old man with archaic ways of thinking. Well finally she's away in college this year. I thought I could broach the subject of guns again when she was home for a visit recently. We are planning a big family trip to visit family in Maine in a few weeks and me and my cousins are going shooting at their range so I brought it up and told her I want her to come with us. Well she broke into such a fckn rant and of course bringing up Sandy Hook and now she isn't going up to Maine with us. It just breaks my heart all that she means to me and some jackass liberal that I want to rip his head off can come along and be that influential over her. A friend of mine is in the same exact boat with his daughter - different school, different teacher but same story. I swear they are hand picking these imbeciles to brainwash our kids.

Not so crazy now is it?

I would have never doubted it. I just truly believed that I raised my daughter with eyes wide open. I now believe if they could get to her - this country is absofcknlutely doomed. No chance at setting things right now.

One tiny little plus is that my brother and his liberal college girl obama supporting hippy girlfriend were BOTH fans of more gun control (my brother is just pssy whipped because we were raised better than that!) and two things happened recently that have them looking into getting hand gun permits: 1) a cab driver was shot in the head right in front of their house in Asbury Park. My brother even walked right past the taxi sitting there, saw the guy slumped over the steering wheel and thought he was just sleeping while waiting outside for his fare. And 2) I let them hold my Springfield XD and dry fire a couple times. Now they are begging me to take them to the range. And I keep saying "well thanks to Obama's witch hunt against guns I can't get any ammo. See if you can make some calls LOL
