Can you bring it into your local ps to get extended at any time or does it have to be a week before it expires?

Most local PD's ask that you wait till  7-10 days before the expiration date

but to be sure - just call your PD and ask them their policy.

 

And remember that (according to the NJ State Police) the extension is to the

180th day from the original issue date,which isn't always 90 days from the renewal date.

Also, it is town dependent if they will renew it some will while others wont.

Some PDs don't care when you renew it. Some will do it on the 179th day, and some will automatically renewed it on day 1.

Now that I am at a PC....

 

the answer is, it depends on your department.  Call them and ask them, or ask when you get your permits.

 

Some departments want you to bring them in, some can mail in, some can drop off.  Some will want you to wait a few days before they expire, others day of expiration, others don't care how long after expiration as long as it is still within the combined 3 + 3 months, and I have heard of a few that WILL NOT renew.

 

The way the law is written, the department has an option to renew it.  They don't have to.  As such, it is up to them how they want to handle it.
