Waiting on permits...do you "buy" in advance or wait for the permit in hand?

Recommended Posts

So I dropped off paperwork for 3 new permits in September and I'm still waiting. The SP still hasn't cash my $6 check so it's looking like I definitely will not have them in hand before Black Friday. So my question is...how many guys "buy" a pistol in advance of getting their permits? Does anyone fear not getting "approved" for their permits in this state? How was the store you dealt with?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I just put in for my permits a few days ago but I've had a deposit down on a gun for like 2 weeks already and have already bought 1000 rounds for it so if I don't get approved(no reason I shouldn't) I'm screwed lol. Most gunshops will hold a gun with a 1/3-1/2 deposit down no problem, they understand the struggle we have to go thru

I should mention it was the exact gun I was looking for so that's why I jumped the gun(lol), I may actually put a 2nd deposit down if I find the 2nd exact gun I want before I get permits

I think it depends on your "need, finances, tolerance level of the bureaucracy, etc."

Myself, I'd probably wait until I have P2Ps in  hand before purchasing, not wanting to commit the $$$ until I know I can cover the buys.

But that's just me. Everyone's different.  Now, if it's a "smokin' hot deal," or a rare piece that might disappear (not to be seen again) if not scarfed up immediately, then that may be a different scenario.

I have three handguns sitting at an FFL right now, just put in for the permits last week, doing SP-015 and SP-016 right now. Should have all three before Christmas.

So, the moral of this story........  If you feel there is no reason you will be denied permits, then buy all you can afford!

If you get denied, or think you will be denied, you better be looking for a way to clear your name, and possibly a buyer for the handguns you won't be able to get.

Also make sure you deal with an FFL that will hold the guns for you for an unlimited time.

PS: Buy a Dan Wesson Specialist, just in case. I'll have a 4th permit to burn after I get these 3.  :)

I have purchased before the permits came in. But I was very sure they would be approved as there is no reason I know of as to why they would not be approved. The way guns are selling lately I dont think a gun store is going to have an issue getting rid of it if your permits never get approved.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It's truly helpful. While I don't expect to be denied the permits (bought 5 guns in the past 12 months) and recently cleared NICS for my mosin....it's just the bureaucracy of the state that has me wondering.

My first set of permits and updated FID card took exactly 7 weeks...next set of three took 11 weeks and this current set of 3 is just shy 12 weeks with no end in site.

As for the finances, I never buy items I can't afford to pay off in the same month so I'm not worried about that....

I guess I just don't want to buy one and have to leave it at the FFL for an undetermined length of time. Man I really dislike this state...

I still don't understand why any purchase permit is taking more than a month. Pure and utter BS. My town was doing them in 3 weeks with a civilian doing the work. She got promoted to the mayors office and three weeks in....reference letters haven't even been received yet. It's BS and lazy as people.

If I foresee a need for more handguns, I submit for permits. I have a purchase plan, so I know how many I need. Then the acquisition starts through my FFL of choice. That's not a problem because I know it's going to take at least 10 weeks through the NJSP. Currently I'm at 17 weeks and still waiting.

When my FFL acquires the handguns, I pay them for their sales price in full. No reason for them to be short the money while I'm waiting.

In return, they hold the handguns in their safe for me at no charge, regardless of the wait time. This was our agreement. This is important to me.

When the permits come in and I actually transfer the handguns, I then pay shipping, tax and NICS.

And if I'm acquiring more than 3, I submit a Multiple Handgun Exemption about a month before my estimated time of issue. I don't fancy waiting on extensions.

One note. Because this time I had an exact requirement for a particular pistol, and because I found it at another local shop and couldn't acquire it anywhere else with certainty, I contracted for that pistol there. However I'll be paying $10 a month for safe storage because that's what the shop owner wants; whether I paid for it all up front or not. As of now that will cost me an extra $40 minimum on one handgun. I also won't be buying any more in-stock handguns from that shop in the future.

I like mutually rewarding relationships.

I recently bought one off of gunbroker which required me to get permits.

Then I bought two more.

It took me close to 6 months between waiting for permits and waiting for OGAM to break them all out of jail.  Next time I will do an exemption.

I too have one in the vault because I was fooled by how quickly the PD processed my p2p requests last time. Just tell the store that you are waiting and they will hold it. It was once suggested in one of the forum threads that you ask to make sure that there is no fee if the papers are exceedingly slow. Can't hurt.

I would have told them to KMA!

I would also have them ship it to another FFL of your choosing and tell them you will NEVER be back and will spread the word about their policy everywhere you can. Pay his transfer fee and shipping and get it out of there!

No reason for them to charge you a storage fee for a gun that you bought from them.

My guy Ron will hold as many guns as I ask him to for as long as I need him to, NO CHARGE!

In fact, he has three right now. :)

Gringo: Well, I think I'll effectively do that. I believe in free enterprise; he's entitled to run his shop as he sees fit; I knew the policy before I bought the pistol. So it was my choice. But he has lost out (potentially) on more profit because of that policy. My usual FFL charges no rent for pistols purchased from them, and therefore has made significant profit on my account. I shall therefore give them the opportunity to find and receive any handguns I want, and choose not to buy them from the other guy, even if they're on his shelf.

iCarry: My exemption last year was approved in three weeks and arrived with my permits that took 14 weeks. I sent this year's in on October 29 and haven't heard anything yet. Of course my permits aren't in either (17 weeks last Tuesday). I'll let you know.

Boo: yes a shop going under could be a problem. But my belief is that the owner's at my FFL would ensure the handguns I paid for were transferred to me eventually one way or another. That is a risk I accept.

It's wonderful that I must strategize and plan this six to twelve month timeline on an annual basis to contribute to the reduction of violent crime in New Jersey. It would be too tempting to just buy what I wanted when I found it.

Just in keep in mind that the FFL might not have any say in the matter. I know of a shoe repair place in NYC that had made a name for itself working on high-end dress shoes $500-$1000+, and had garnered quite a following on a clothing forum I followed. People picking up their shoes would find the doors chained shut with a sign that that it had been closed down by tax authorities (don't recall if it was IRS or NY State). This happened at least a couple times, though my understanding is that it had eventually been sorted out.

I'm not saying your or any other FFL is on the verge of closing its doors or not paying its taxes, but I can't help but cringe at the thought of people with several guns tied up at a single FFL due to permits and/or OGAM restrictions.

The final timeline is in:

07/23/13   Permits application submitted to NJSP Sussex Station

10/29/13   MHE application submitted to Trenton

11/01/13   MHE approved in Trenton

11/15/13   Permits issued in Trenton

11/22/13   Permits check cashed

11/27/13   Permits and MHE ready for pickup at local barracks

Has it occurred to anyone that buying handguns in NJ is similar to 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light'?

Just tell the store that you are waiting and they will hold it.

Not all shops will do that. I called a place that had a hard to find at the time hg I wanted in stock. Told them I could be there in 45min pay in full if they would hold for me. The J-off actually told me it was illegal to do so. Translation "we know we can sell it so go pound sand". Result= they will never see anymore (I previously spent money there) of me or my money. It's their business and they can set any policy that they want; but have the balls to be honest about it and not make up some BS reason.

About a month later I found my chosen hg at Cheyenne (for less $). They gladly held it for me "as long as it took" so long as it was paid for. Remixer is currently housing my new hg for me as I wait out my 30 days.

In January, when guns were flying off the shelf and inventory was getting scarce, I made a handgun purchase at Cheyenne, which they held for 7 months while I waited for permits.  Bob's did the same on another gun, then a third.  All with the understanding that if I did not get approved (who could trust NJ at that point in time) they would take the guns back.  Good prices and good service at both.  They keep my business.

If you trust "your" FFL then I say lock them down while you can. But if your just walking into a store for the first time with 4-5 guys behind the counter I'd think twice & maybe have a talk with the manager if I could.

That is the most important.  I know of one shop that will only hold for 60 days then you forfeit you deposit.  I wont start a war on gun stores here but just ask and read your layawway paperwork and you cant go wrong either way.
