Online State Police Name Check for Pistol Permit?

So I applied for a Pistol permit and my local PD is asking me to complete this:

It costs $20 bucks, usually permits were $2. Is this something new? I have almost 30 handguns and never had to do this. Can anyone shed some light on if its something I really have to do? Here are the instructions they gave me:

 

- Log on to https://www.njportal.com/njsp/criminalrecords/  and click on the 

ON LINE FORM 212A, a highlighted block located on the lower left side of the page.

 

- In the ORI number box put 

 

- Follow the prompts for demographic and payment information.

 

- Upon completion of the form you will receive an email Confirmation & Receipt that will include a confirmation number.

 

- At this time the request will be forwarded to the Police Department’s work queue for approval and submission to the NJ State Police for processing.

 

- If more detailed information is needed click on the Help Tab, located on the top right side of the page.

The $20.00 is for the background check. The permits are still 2 bucks.

Hmm, maybe the PD was just taking care of this internally before but now they are passing the cost onto the person looking for the permit?

Yep my town started this a couple months ago also. Instead of $18 money order, its $20 online with your credit card. The town will still collect the $2 per permit. So really I think it was worth it, $2 I don't have to deal with the post office. & my permits came back in 17days instead of 3 months. Its way faster for the town = way faster for you!

Very Simply, there once was (and for some depts. still is) a hard copy form to fill out for the "background check" that is done on each subsequent P2P request, instead of the full "MorphoTrak" fingerprint thing. It cost $18.00, instead of MorphoTrak's $57.00 + change.

 

The above is a new "electronic" version of that old hard copy form. It cost $20.00 instead of $18.00.  It has no effect on the costs of FIDs or P2Ps, which are still $5.00 and $2.00 each, respectively. Some departments (like mine) have implemented this new "electronic SB212a" form... some have not yet.

I know some towns batch up the paperwork and do it at intervals. They may just be suggesting it because the pile is getting big and it's about that time. Alternatively, it could just be that someone is going on or coming back form vacation.

Well, either way, the local PD still has to inquire with the NJSP SBI unit. Either they send the form, or they use the eelctronic receipt number you provide them from going on line to fill out the electronic form.  What might be facilitated is the "record keeping." That is, with the electronic form, as long as you give your local PD the correct receipt number, there is less  a chance I think of there being a "clerical error" that might delay processing. I'm not sure if the "results" come back the same way it was sent in or not (ie. "electronic results" if sent in electronically, or "hard copy" results if sent in hard copy), or if it is all electronic results or whatever. I would hope "electronic results" in all cases, again, to avoid clerical errors.

 

I guess the "time" taken involves whatever the NJSP has to do to "produce" the results, in either form.

Just picked up the paperwork for my town. Looks like Saddle Brook has started doing the same.

Just submitted mine in Elmwood Park, they are still doing it the old way.
