Ammo purchase @Dicks

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's been a while since I last bought ammo at dicks, but after clearing the ammo counter and being escorted to the cashier, upon checkout I was asked for my birth date and to acknowledge the question on keypad for credit card swiping affirming that I am a US citizen. I'm beginning to wonder if I am a citizen anymore! I asked to speak to a manager. He stated it was Dicks policy to ask for those 2 things. Any others experience this? Like I said it's been a while, but I don't think they'll be getting any of my future business

That was also my experience in Paramus. Aren't permanent residents also permitted to get an FID? If so, what's the point of the question? They should ask prospective buyers "Do you intend to use this ammunition for an illegal purpose?". This might catch a bunch of criminals and terrorists off guard and lead to their capture [/sarcasm].

Yes. I have experienced the same at multiple DSG stores in N.J. It is their normal practice. Btw, in the interest of safeguarding the privacy of my real DOB, I usually give them an approximation. I am old and bald, so no one questions my exact age, LOL.

Yes , i have purchased from Dicks in the recent past and had the same experience. i normally get ammo from my local shop guy but got the bug to shoot outdoors on first decent weather day this year, but it was Sunday, my guy is closed so went to Dick bags. they had what i wanted (.40) but got the same request at checkout .. very annoyed . told them they pushed me out the door for last time.

Haven't shopped at a Dick's since they pulled their evil black rifles following Sandy Hook.  I advise y'all do the same.

Plan ahead and order your ammo from places that will take your money *AND* support your RKBA.

Same here. No Dick's bags for me. I go there to look but not buy.

I also refuse to spend my money at Dick's. But anytime some kid behind a counter asks my age my standard answer is usually this:

"probably old enough to be your daddy, BTW tell your mother I said hello for me when you see her".

I used to have a great relationship with some guys at my local DSG, across the river in PA @ Oxford Valley Mall.  So I have bought many firearms and plenty of ammo.

The thing is, their prices of ammo usually suck unless on sale.  HOWEVER, during late December '12 to about March or April '13, I was straight up raiding them for shotgun shells.  Usually about 3 cases at a time of Federal Value Pack / etc. target loads, generally 8 shot or 7 1/2, ... $5.99 a 25-rd-box .  So it was basically $60 a case of 10 boxes/250 rds... They would let me take 3 cases at a time, when they had enough me and my father would both take 3.  Often we were getting the Red, White, & Blue rounds boxes, then a lot of the Pink breast cancer awareness shells, then just regular.  I probably shot 5 cases of this back then (in my M930SPX, new-at-the-time 870 Tactical/Magpul/Police, and especially the brand-new-then- Saiga 12.  The Saiga ate these up like chicken chow mein).

After they ran dry of Federal they gave me the same price for Remington Gun Club loads... But DSG has a ton of turnover in personnel and soon the newer people got stingy and wouldn't do anything nice, and before I moved all I was finding there was like Winchester cases for more money.  And *never* any .22LR there.    But when they have sales the prices are usually good and their longgun prices are almost the best you can find often.

For the age thing, it is not a legal requirement, just pick an age over 21.

Ever notice many times when you buy alcohol, the cashier gets a question on date of birth, but just types anything over 21? Most people don't waste time on dumb F questions except Dicks.

You already met the NJ legal obligation when you gave the ID and FID.

Dicks goes out of their way to make any firearms related purchased difficult, typically making up their own rules and calling them laws.

It's best to just support your LGS.

I have just realized that over around a year (after I got into shooting) I bought... 0 (zero!) rounds from NJ businesses. All my attempts to buy anything in NJ failed - it was either outrageously expensive (like $25 or so per box of 50rds 115gr 9mm) or always OOS.

I either buy ammo online or while traveling - in NC, PA, VA and last weekend for the first time in CT.

BTW, CT Walmart shelves were full of cheap 9mm a couple of days ago, don't really know why, because in PA (at least in the areas close to NJ) they are normally close to empty on weekends.

Maybe I am the only one who do this, who knows, LOL :)

Out of curiosity, what price was the 9's?

Ramsey Outdoor in Ramsey had plenty of American Eagle 9's for $20 on Sat.

Cheap compared to prices lately, but not quite where it should be.

Haven't seen any at Wallmart in Suffern in ages.

I've only been escorted to the front of the store when I've bought a gun.

Sometimes Dicks puts the ammo in a locked box, sometimes not.  This is in the Princeton, Burlington, Mt. Laurel and Cherry Hill Locations.

They have asked for Date of Birth and Citizenship for a while now.

I have only purchased shotgun shells at Dick's (Rockaway NJ). I have done so 3 times. 2 out of 3 times, I got the little screen asking if I was "over 18?" No other questions. No display of either DL or FID. No escort to the cashier.

I've always gotten the question, but never gotten an escort. Up until last week, I was able to walk the ammo myself. Now, I get to walk it myself in one of those plastic security boxes that only the cashier can open.

And that question is hard... I feel like if you accidentally answer it incorrectly, ATF agents are going to pop out of the woodwork.

I may be able to offer some insight as an employee of Dicks.

When you give your id and fid at the gun counter, they write your birthday in a box. Now people make mistakes, especially with the high turnover rate, so a 20 year old could be given a box of .22.

The illegal alien question is pointless, probably just to cover their behind in case any legal issue arises.

But the birthday is important. They are supposed to look at the birthdays entered at the register and compare them to the birthdays given at the gun counter to ensure that the fid holder did not give the ammo to an Ineligible person on the way to the register. But it is never cross referenced so it is pointless. But it's the corporate policy.

Does this also apply to shotgun shells?  I understand if it applies to long gun ammo (I don't know if Dick's sells hand gun ammo).

You do not need a FID for shotgun ammo, but we do ask the register questions. Again, there is no other reasonable explanation except to cover their ass in a lawsuit.

They asked me for a FID in Rockaway for a box of Remington copper solids 12g slugs, probably because they were hollow point. But that was a long time ago when I used to spend thousands of dollars a year on Hunting, Fishing, and other sporting equipment there. Not anymore.

Dicks in Freehold told me that they require an FID for all ammo purchases and that it was their policy.

I once clicked 'no' on the citizenship question, just to see what would happen.   The clerk looked up and said only: "you have to change that answer before I can sell you this."

So that question is a foolproof means of accomplishing whatever it is that Dicks thinks they need to accomplish.

You do not need a FID for shotgun ammo, but we do ask the register questions.

Maybe in your store at this time, but in Woodbridge you have always (well, in the past 10+ years) had to show a FID for any ammo, handgun, rifle or shotgun.

Just like Scrap I bought cases upon cases upon cases of 7 1/2 Target Club shells.  I used to buy 5 cases at a time every time I drove by and they had the sale.  Needed the FID every single time.  Didn't need to do the walk of shame because they had to use a hand truck to get my ammo to my car.

I work at the Woodbridge location. The fid is only required for handgun and rifle ammo. Shotgun ammo is fair game. Now that doesn't mean that an uneducated employee won't ask for one and refuse to sell you without one.

The reasoning behind it is we sell shotgun ammo to NY residents also, who usually don't have a fid card. But they can not buy handgun or rifle ammo from us.
