Body armor

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at the ar500 set ups and they are having a nice sale this weekend. Anyone familure with their products. Not sure if I want the conceal vest with side plates or a molle vest. The conceal vest I think I might get some actual use out of. But I'm shopping for a tac vest anyway so one with plates would be nice.

From the chest rig thread;

Got my plates in today (as well as a new holster. God I love new gear day) and holy shit was I underestimating the effect the extra weight would have. I'm super glad I didnt go with the steel plates. Adding an extra 5 or so lbs onto what I have would be rough.

I'm sitting here, in my plate carrier and belt rig, as I type, and have to rethink some of my setup. Again. I want to see if I can switch the releasable part of my PC to the left side, so it doesnt interfere with shouldering the rifle. Speaking of which, its much different to get a good cheek weld now. I think I need to lengthen the suspenders on my belt to give me a little more room to clear my emergency reload mags. I can draw and holster my pistol with no issues thankfully (have shooters cut plates). I may have to adjust the vertical grip on my rifle to account for the depth(?) of the PC. I will say, the multi curve with the shooters cut is very comfortable as far as the plates themselves are concerned.

Any advice from the guys who wear this for a living? I don't know that it's a good idea to take a stroll around the neighborhood wearing this to break it in lol.

If you're looking to get plates, do yourself a favor, save as much weight as possible.

These are the ones I picked up:

HighCom Security Guardian 4SAS-7 Level IV 10x12 Multi Curve Shooters Cut. Came out to be about $250 for the pair, shipped.

I definitely suggest ceramic plates. Highcom seems to be well regarded and gives you 25% off if you sign up for their newsletter.

Second on the ceramic suggestion.  I was not a fan of the steel plates I had both from a weight and a comfort perspective.

Don't forget, AR500 plates for body armor behave just like AR500 plates for shooting steel. There will be flecks of copper jacketing and other components of the bullet spraying everywhere after a shot (in particular... watch out for your face).

You can't beat proper armor and you might as well go multi-hit Ceramic (for weight savings and durability) since you can get a pair for 250-300.

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
    • I get the added benefit that since I have a TSP rather than a true 401(k) they tax my retirement too. Yaaaay!
