Howard 538 Posted June 13, 2014 I have a router that offers WiFi on 2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ. The 5 GHZ signal is MUCH faster but does not travel as far. I have trouble getting it out by my pool, and have some older devices in the house that only work on the older 2.4 GHZ signal, so I need both active. My problem is that my iPhone sometimes latches on to the 2.4 GHZ signal instead of the 5 GHZ signal when it is available. I know I can tell it not to connect to the slower network, but then when I am out at the pool it will default to LTE or 3G. Is there a way I can make it use the 2.4 GHZ signal automatically when it can't pickup the 5 GHZ but force it to use the 5 GHZ if it is available ???? voyager9 3,434 Posted June 13, 2014 I don't think you can set priority with iOS. Does the router use a different SSID for each frequency? If so perhaps use the same one for both and let IOS use the strongest signal.
Dextersmom 0 Posted June 13, 2014 You can't pick and choose but maybe relocate the router within the house so the signal increases when your near the pool but doesn't weaken when you inside either! It's a balancing act! Sent from my own head
Recon Racoon 49 Posted June 13, 2014 As far as I know iOS doesn't let you prioritize connections. What you could do like mentioned above is move the router to a location that offers the strongest signal when out side. Or you could keep it where it is and just get a wireless bridge to extend the signal to your pool. I'm not sure how the bridge would affect signal strength and latency times though. So your signal might drop because of the transmission to the bridge then having to move through a physical barrier (which really screws with RF) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ogfarmer 138 Posted June 13, 2014 Turn off cellular data, so it's forced to use wifi only. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Howard 538 Posted June 13, 2014 Moving router unfortunately is not practical. I guess the best solution short of a bridge is to just tell the phone to ignore the 2.4 signal and just turn it on manually when out by the pool. It does use different SSID for each frequency the way I have it set up. I think I originally had it set up with just one ID and it still would pick the slower one too often. Guess there is no perfect solution.

Porthole 15 Posted July 4, 2014 We have two iPhones a 5 and 5s. Both have different connectivity in the house, both are mediocre at best. Using one of the newest "high end" routers, a dual band, 3 antenna AC router. Went with AC as two of our laptops both have AC wireless cards in them. My wife walks out the front door, literally 30' from the router and she loses a connection, not poor, just drops it. Mine just goes into super slo mo mode, so much so that I frequently turn of the phone wifi. Very disappointed in the whole access thing. At our firehouse we had connectivity issues from one side of the building to the other, which was understandable. The station is all block and steel with 30' bay, with an engine and truck between the router and where most of us use wifi. them with and engine and truck. At the station we added a plug in wifi repeater. That works real good and I will be doing that at home. Simple device that plugs into any outlet and uses the electrical lines as an antenna ( I think). Don't know which one to try yet, but will be getting one of these from Costco since the return policy is so great. http://www.costco.com/Amped-Wireless%C2%AE-High-Power-Wi-Fi-700MW-Dual-Band-AC-Range-Extender.product.100075438.html http://www.costco.com/Netgear-AC1200-WiFi-Range-Extender-.product.100107722.html http://www.costco.com/Amped-Wireless-High-Power-WiFi-Range-Extender-%2526-Smart-Repeater.product.11731650.html http://www.costco.com/Netgear-Universal-WiFi-Range-Extender-4-PORT-WiFi-Adapter.product.11661883.html http://www.costco.com/Amped-Wireless%C2%AE-High-Power-Wireless-N-Wi-Fi-600mW-Range-Extender-%2526-Smart-Repeater.product.100104435.html http://www.costco.com/Amped-Wireless%C2%AE-High-Power-Compact-AC-Wi-Fi-Range-Extender.product.100109104.html
