It's all in the "symbolism."  I believe the greater concern of PETA is that a huge Hollywood celebrity (and supposedly as "progressive" as they) is seen in front of an (apparently) dead animal of any sort, as if he *had* killed it. They absolutely can't have that, as it would encourage others to do the same with other animals!    180˚ opposite of their "Go Vegan" and their "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaigns.

 

Although I personally don't hunt myself, I don't have any issues with those who do, and I would do so myself if necessary for food. It's no worse than going to buy meat at the supermarket, for Pete's sake! Although I suppose PETA wouldn't want me doing that, either..

 

I have no philosophical or moral difficulties with being an "omnivore..." just like all the other omnivorous species. The only difference between us homo sapiens and them is that we developed more advanced hunting tools, and we've learned how to "farm raise" to sustain certain species.  I'd bet if the other species could do the same, they would.
