Trading rifle with a friend from North Carolina?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering what the process entails to swap/trade a rifle with my friend who lives in North Carolina?

Basically, we want to swap 2 NJ legal rifles. I'm certain the incoming rifle must go through my FFL for me to accept, but does he need to ship it directly from an FFL in North Carolina or can he just send it through UPS or FedEx himself?

On my end, do I need to ship the outbound rifle from my FFL, or can I ship it directly to him?

He has had rifles shipped directly to his doorstep from other out of state gun shops previously.

Or, can he drive it in next month, and we do the transfer at my NJ FFL when we are both present, then drive his back home with him?

Any interstate firearm transaction must go through an FFL. In the case of long guns it can be an FFL in the seller's or buyer's state. In the case of a handgun it must be an FFL in the buyer's state.

The above assumes that it is a legal firearm in the state being sold into.

Adios,

The easiest way is for both of you to take your rifles to a FFL, you both give your rifles to the FFL and he transfers the rifles. You can't do this at a NJ FFL unless your friend has a NJ FID card. You could do this at a PA FFL. I wouldn't just walk in I'd call and be sure the FFL understands what I want to do?

You can ship to FFLs in your home states but what I related is the easiest if your friend is going to be up here.

    • I have a like new (only zeroed) PSA Sabre KAC M110 Clone in 7.62x51mm. This is PSA's clone version of the infamous Knights Armament M110. Very high quality, excellent 2 stage trigger, 20" chrome lined barrel, adjustable gas block, and is NJ legal with a pinned Surefire SOCOM muzzle brake.  Radian Raptor charging handle and Radian ambi safety. Upper and lower are billet receivers compatible with all KAC SR-25 and LMT MWS/MARS-H pattern receivers.  Im no where close to being a long range shooter but ive been able to get 0.7 MOA out of it with 175gr federal gold medal match ammo and Im sure the rifle is capable of much better accuracy. Asking $1650 (which is a steal for what you get) at any FFL thats a reasonable distance from Jersey City. I can also ship but that would be on your dime.  Optic/bipod etc not included but can be purchased if interested. Vortex Razor Gen-II HD 3-18x50 FFP with the new EBR-7C MRAD illuminated reticle in a 1.54 reptilia mount. Id include the optic for another $1700. Happy to answer any questions or provide more pictures. Not interested in any trades. Thank you.
