FN SLP shotgun

Recommended Posts

   Hi guys,

Looking to get a semi auto shotgun and leaning towards the FN SLP 12 gauge 18 inch barrel rifle stock. Wanted to know your thoughts on this if you have any experience (good or bad) with FN SLP. This shotgun will be mainly used as basic HD gun. heres a link to the item from Buds. Thanks.

The FN SLP is a very well made gun and to some well worth the money.

To me, I have to ask, does a HD shotgun need to be $1000.00 + ???

For HD, there is "just as good" for a lot less money - JMO

Benelli Nova or Super Nova

Mossberg 500

Are two that come to mind.........................

By the sound of it, it's picky with ammo - look at the reviews...

Requires 2 3/4" shells with 3 Dram or higher - that's higher FPS shells - more of a load - more oomph - more needed to cycle the action.

If you want a semi auto, go for a Mossberg 930 SPX Home Security.

You could also check out the Mossberg 930 SPX - amazing gun.  Gas operating system that auto-regulates itself depending on the load, I have had this since Feb 2010 and it has been 101% FLAWLESS!  PERFECT.

They come with the best sights you can buy in LPA Ghost Ring Sights, there are a few different versions now , I looked on your website there, Buds, and 5 or 6 models come up.

It's an amazing value that competes directly with the FN SLP at less price, I looked at both the FN and the Benelli M2 Tactical back in 2010 and lucked out with the M930SPX.

The FN SLP has two well-known issues. The carrier latch will attempt to eat your thumb during loading. Most people who use it for 3gun opt for a modification that renders the latch slightly less bloodthristy: http://www.c-rums.com/Carriers.html

The second issue is with the gas system. The gas piston's spring has been known to crack or break during operation. Outfits like SureCycle (SRM Performance) offer a piston sealing service (runs something like $35), removing the piston spring entirely. Here's a good overview of the problem and the gas system's operation: http://www.texasguntalk.com/forums/shotguns/32640-understanding-shotgun-gas-systems-fn-slp-winchester-sx2-sx3-browning-silver.html

My gun functions just fine after the modifications above, but for $1000, I'd expect a bit better from FN.

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
