Bushmaster Bolt Carrier Group

Any thoughts on this Bushmaster BCG? It's $80 at Brownells. I'm building a rifle on the low end of the price spectrum. This looked enticing.

Avoid. Bushmaster. BCGs.

 

Buy a Mil-spec bolt. It will cost a bit more but is a better value - once you factor in replacement costs when the BM bolt fails - and will be more reliable.

Look for something with standard phosphate finish, bolt made with Carpenter 158 steel that is shot peened high pressure tested (HPT) and magnetic particle inspected (MPI), internally chrome lined carrier, gas key properly staked. That Spikes Vicious quotes is fine. If you're a milspec fanboi get a BCM otherwise you'll never hear the end of it from the real "operators".

There's always the standard "no-label" bolt carrier group from PSA. It's usually  $99. I put one in the wife's gun...works fine. I think right now they might be selling them with a free charging handle or something too.

I've shot a DPMS BCG (worst of all bolts) in FA for about 5,000 rounds at 1000 rpm in a shorty. Almost all BETA dumps.

 

But for real guns I use Colt.

Still works fine. Can't say as much for the gas port which I burned through on DSA chrome-molly 11.5" HBAR. Also destroyed 75% of the baffle on the PWS FSC 556 comp on it, but it still shoots sparks 5' each side so I'm sticking with it. I've certainly beaten the snot out of it. DPMS bolts at one time had (have?) a poor reputation, though. It's a fun upper, not a theater defense weapon
