I didn't see this posted above but an important part of starting off any new shooter is, GIVE THEM A GOOD CHANCE OF SUCCESS. Any new shooter, regardless of age, will soon lose interest if they're not hitting the target.
I start pistol shooters at 5 yds. Rifle shooters (shooting from a supported position) 15 yds. Then move to reactive targets. These are cheap for ones that can handle 22s. As their groups tighten up you can move the target further away.
Get them to shoot groups and you can adjust from there.
