Dicks Sporting Good Fail...

Recommended Posts

So bought a ruger 10/22 on thanksgiving day, about 5:30pm, and knew they would run the NICS on Friday when the state opened....

No call from DSG on Friday, which I knew might happen because the state gets over run with NICS checks because of the sales...

Went to Dicks this morning to get something else, and went into the lodge to inquire about the NICS check...the lodge associate called the manager and they looked in the NJSP portal...

Fail # 1- he said my check came back yesterday morning.... And they never called me... Kinda new that was gonna happen....

MAJOR FAIL- During the whole interaction today, (I did leave with my rifle) they never checked my ID to confirm who I was! I just told them my name and they gave me a gun.......

They shouldn't be able to sell guns

Which DSG did you go to?

There was a huge NICS backlog on Friday due to Black Friday gun sales.  I was the only person to walk away from DSG Woodbridge with a gun yesterday - and that's only because I bought it on Tuesday and had the NICS run on Wednesday.

You do realize that Dick's was open from 5PM Thursday to 11PM Friday - with rotating shifts.  They were also insanely busy during the day.  I'm not surprised you didn't get a call.

Seasonal staff also doesn't know 100% about the policies.  They should have been checking ID - I know I got ID'd about 3x.

I went to east brunswick. They checked ID and FID many times on Thursday..... But not at all today.....

Seems crazy that you let someone walk out with a firearm without checking their ID another time

Buds Guns had a major fail

"budsgunshop black friday scam? was anyone on here able to buy the doorbusters?"

Besides a major internet outage, people who did manage to put the item in their shopping cart was swapped out for full retail.

I got a call from the Rockaway store at 11Am to come pick mine up.  But they didn't check my ID when I was picking up...

Just seems crazy to me. It could have been anyone picking up the gun. Maybe if it were the same salesman and he remembered me..

I read Bud's FB post about this....seems they had ~500% more web traffic than anticipated, based on previous years, which caused their servers to crash. The allotted amount of each item was sold, but there were a limited number of each item. This resulted in hundreds, not thousands, of people getting the deals. I would have loved to get one of those $99 Tisas 9mm pistols but I wasn't quick enough (I really wanted the $99 Canik but they won't ship it to PRNJ because it comes with 17 rd mags). I'll try again Monday, if not I'll just pick up the $300 Beretta 92S -used Italian Police model...still a good price for a Beretta.

This signature is AWESOME!!!

So next black friday you walk into each dicks sporting goods store and say "I got a call to come down and pick up my gun", the store that doesnt ask for i.d. will just sell it to you, the store that asks for i.d., just say it must be the wrong dicks store and thank them. Horrible world, isnt it?

I did tell them my name, but it could have been some else, maybe a prohibited person trying to pick up my gun... I got my firearm , I'm not worried, I just think since these salesmen had no idea who I was it might be wise to check an ID again... Just saying

so you think some random person is gonna guess your name. Is your name Kevin Sweetwater? Jose Rodriguez? Gregory Watkins? there I just guessed three names and I bet none are your name.

How the heck is someone gonna guess your name and know that, that name is someone who bought a gun?

Unless they were standing over you with a scope while entering info onto computer or leaning over your shoulder when writing it on forms. I never have said my full name out loud when filling out 4473.

To think someone can just guess someones name does not make sense.

That's insane. Did they make you re-sign (recertification as required by Federal law) the bottom of page 2 of the 4473. It is required if you pick up the gun on a different day then your nics check was submitted. If not, they could get in trouble. In reality they should not date the COE, which is your proof of ownership until the gun actually leaves the store. Thank God they don't attempt to sell handguns...can you imagine how bad they would screw that up?

I personally don't care.... I got what I paid for.... I'm pointing out the lack of oversight.

I agree. If they did that while they were having an ATF audit, they would surely get a stern warning... or even worse have their FFL revoked if they had warnings for other compliancy issues.

Are you sure you didn't have a copy of your picture ID together with a firearm?

When I came to Heritage Guild at 7:50pm Friday to pick a gun that I paid for 3 hours earlier I spoke to another salesperson, not the one submitting my docs for PICS check. The "new" guy didn't ask me for ID either, but he had a page in his hands with a copy of my DL, so I guess he might have had a look at me...

But to make it worse, I heard numerous stories about people going unnoticed through international passport control with their spouse's passports (just by accident)...

On Thursday during the day of purchase, they inspected my ID and FID but did not take them. He picked them up and put them back on the glass. I can say 100% that no copy was made.

I have to admit I only bought guns in B&M three times (twice in RTSP and once in Heritage Guild), but I am absolutely sure that all three times store associates made copies of my DL, FID and my green card. Maybe the process is different because I'm not a citizen, don't know, but in HG I saw a lot of papers with copies of only PA DLs, so I guess the do it for everyone buying guns there...

All the other times I purchased in NJ at other FFLs they made a copy of my info too.

When I purchased from DSG in New York years ago they also made a copy of my DL.

During this transaction my copies were made! My DL and FID did not leave the glass.

LOL. If your GF says you yelled at her, and you become prohibited for life, there is no waiting period for pistol purchase permits and one gun a month doesn't apply either. Cash on the barrel in Jersey, like in 42 other states.

That's not really the point. They SHOULD recheck his ID to confirm he is who he said he is. It would be very easy to have a sibling (lets say a younger sister) who's dating a prick, and overhears OP at his house say he bought this gun at Dicks. The prick would know where to go, the guys name, even his address.

I almost always have my work coat in the back of my car, and it has my name on it. If i was getting into my car, talking to a friend on my phone about the sweet deal i just got, if someone is walking by or sitting the car next to mine listening to me, they now have my name and what weapon I bought. From the sounds of it, that's all the info OP gave the sales associate when he came back in.

Is it likely to work? No. But it's one of those things where if it DID happen, everyone would be ready to crucify that CSA cuz of such an obviously preventable mistake.

Even among NJ's Pro-2A community, we believe and act as if guns are dangerous and inherently evil.  We say that everyone should have the right to carry one, there should be no permission from the government to purchase one - but, we flip out if the store lets you pick one up based only on the knowledge that you know your name and which gun you already had a background check to purchase.

You realize that many people on this board remember when there was no showing of ID to purchase a firearm.  Once upon a time, the right to keep and bear arms was not as infringed as it is today.  I'm disappointed that even this group finds that so scary. I'm disappointed that we want to be sure that our ID's are checked and that we're properly vetted before exercising our rights.

As long as we're scared of guns, we'll never convince anyone else otherwise.

We are our own worst enemy.

And if someone who shouldn't HAD gotten their hands on it by not showing ID, all the anti's would be up in arms saying we need even stricter gun laws to prevent something like this from happening again. And knowing this ass backwards state, those laws would actually pass.

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

Although it's not a NJ establishment I believe West Side Rifle and Pistol Range is the last indoor gun range that exists in NYC of all places. I happen to know the guys and they are a great bunch of guys. I found out that they are also hurting like all other self owned businesses and someone mentioned they have a gofundme page currently. The fact that they are a 2A establishment and also the only one left in the NYC I figured i  can let our forum members know about their page. They did not come to me about this but if I can help out a business/friend and spread the word I will do so and for a good bunch of guys. I understand that for some of us it's hard to donate but if you can that would be great. If you can also spread the word and post on your social media sites that would be great. I would do so but I don't have any accounts on FB, IG or other sites. If you do donate drop them a message that it was you heard about them via NJGF!

    • I've watched a lot of "Mighty Ships" series on TV, as well as cruise ship series. It seems prevalent for large ships to have GPS tracking, and possibly guidance. So the path of this ship should be on record somewhere. And one critical fact would be whether or not as the ship approached the bridge it followed the correct path in the harbor channel. The conspiracy aspect would ask was  one of the electronic guidance/navigation systems hacked to put it on a collision course? I'm not anxious to find a terrorist attack. But if you'd asked me on September 10, 2001 what were the odds of four hijacked aircraft being successfully flown by amateurs into three iconic American structures... I will say there's not a doubt in my mind there are nasty people that crossed the border to cause trouble. I just can't be certain how, and how much.
    • It's been reported now that there were two harbor pilots on board and 21 crewmen. The article mentions that there were no cars on the bridge when it collapsed.   Actually, divers found two people trapped in their car.  They were recovered Tuesday afternoon.
