Free service to NJGF USGI collectors

Recommended Posts

I recently came into posession of the SRS books, complete set, and am willing to do a serial number lookup of any USGI firearm.  there is only about a 20% success rate, but it offers a nice glimpse into the history of your rifles.  Just PM or post your serial number and I'll look it up.  I found out that my 45-70 Trapdoor carbine was assigned to Troop A of the Nevada Territory Volunteer Cavalry in 1885

and one of my M1D's was "recovered" in Korea in 1953

so lets have fun and I'll let you know if there is a SRS "hit" but remember there is only a slim chance it will come up........................

Fishnut, your number isn't listed individually, but a block of serial numbers very near it shows 17th infantry. It skips serials but in the book there is a list of about 25 that show that range was 17th, so I would say it would be a safe bet to say that one was too.

Usnmars thank you now I have to see if I can find out if great grandpa was in the 17th. I do know that he was infantry so just maybe he snuck his rifle home. I do know he sent back a broomhandle mauser that I now have :) along with his gasmask and mess kit

jon for the first one it actually is a hit....

date 03-08-43 ss mojave

and here is what I found on the mojave

Mojave was assigned to the Greenland Patrol in 1942, where she took part in convoy escort and rescue operations. While acting as escort for the slow group of Convoy SG-6 which had departed Sydney, Nova Scotia on 25 August, she assisted in the rescue of 570 men from the torpedoed army transport USAT Chatham. The escort and anti-submarine accomplishments of the cutters were truly vital to the winning of the Battle of the Atlantic.[

The American books took about 10 years to get, but I will gladly devote another 10 years for russian books.  But I think i have better chances of Barack telling the truth than finding a set of Russian books.

Out of curiosity, how many books are in the US set?

The SRS books are a 4 book set that has most of what is left from the military archives.  It goes back to the Civil War era and is just a listing of serial numbers you have to dig through.  The data contained is small for each individual gun but is a nice insight into the history of your gun.  One member's serial number was in a range of rifles that just said "San Diego City Schools-JROTC" and others have Recovered, or Recovered from KIA.  There is only a slight chance of an actual hit on your serial number most of the time you can piece it together as you can see a block of serial numbers went to this place and yours falls into the block.  But once in a while you find a direct hit with your serial.  If looking for a set of the books, prepare for sticker shock.... they aren't cheap.
