Rob0115 1,105 Posted December 30, 2014 I saw that RTSP has an M1A Socom on their website. I've always wanted one without the rail system because of the weight. I've never fired one, anyone have experience? Is it worth the dough? Thanks.
Lublin 3 Posted January 5, 2015 They aren't cheap to shoot but they're awesome. That's the only reason why I haven't bought one yet. If I commit to a firearm I make sure it's one that I can shoot/train with often.
DevsAdvocate 112 Posted January 5, 2015 I don't see why someone would buy a 16" SOCOM when the 18" SCOUT is a better deal. Giving up the 2" in barrel doesn't help anything in terms of making the rifle more compact.
Lublin 3 Posted January 20, 2015 The Socom 16 is just more bad ass than the Scout, but the Scout is def the better deal.
blksheep 466 Posted January 20, 2015 I had a Scout about 10 years ago now. It was awesome. Sold it like a dummy.

I'll make sure to let the Mk 17, or all the other shortish .308 guns out there. Admittedly powder choice makes a difference, but you already know that. That is however no excuse for buying an M1A. For me the only interesting thing about is that it is pretty in its full length, wood stock default config. The SOCOM/Scout are like putting plastic furniture on Kentucky rifle. If in fact the OP handloads (I don't know if he does) Faster powder to burn in 16" Higher gas impulse on the op rod. Maybe better off just throwing a flame. Yep M-14's are pretty. I just don't want to carry one at my advanced years.
usnmars 136 Posted January 20, 2015 Look for an 80's vintage M1a instead of tacticool. They were almost 100% GI parts and a lot better rifles.

Everyone tells me oprod guns are better, they wouldn't be lying to me, would they? Regardless, 16" 308/7.62 guns are nothing new, and they work. Never saw anybody bend a gas key. Work but they're flame throwers.
Old School 611 Posted January 20, 2015 I load my own to answer an earlier question Sorry Rob, forgot the OP was you. I'm sure with some care a 16" can be loaded efficiently.

Shane45 807 Posted January 21, 2015 I like my 16" 308's! If I had to run out into the apocalypse, its what I would grab out of everything I have. I have not had obvious overbore issues with my rifles and factory ammo.
