What's a good gun oil

Recommended Posts

Just cover it in an inch of Cosmoline lol...

No I'm kidding, don't do that!

Using a silicone cloth works wonders, it really does a good job of protecting gun finishes. I've seen silicone impregnated gun socks as well for long term storage.

I wipe all my guns down with Barricade.  Works great.

^^^^^THIS^^^^^

Works great for black powder guns too.  And if it works for black powder (corrosive X 10) it will work for anything you mere mortals will throw at it, lol!

I use any motor oil I have laying around, usually motorcycle synthetic. I didn't jump on the motor oil bandwagon until somewhat recently. I've tried the expensive gun oils but I just see no difference. I'd rather buy more guns than spend 30 bucks on some tiny 4oz bottle of specific 'gun' lube.

Define long term storage.

One day when I was visiting the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, I asked one of the curators how they preserve the guns and swords in their weapons section. The answer was "A medium coat of Murphy's Oil". I've since then used that on a number of metal and wood surfaces for long term storage with great success.

For gun oil, I use Mobil 1, but any high quality synthetic motor oil will do. For gun grease, I use any high temp lithium wheel grease.

But for long term storage, I prefer grease over oil.

plus it keeps them in 'ready' status.  Storage, whether long or short-term is skill most really haven't acquired.   I do not inlcude myself in that group:)

3 parts mobil and 1 part motorcycle oil is all you will ever need:)  I run this only in all my firearms with zero issues

Wow, I didn’t know people used Mobil 1 for storage. I guess it makes sense when you think about it. I will keep that in the back of my mind for the future. I have always used Barricade without any complaints. I have a micro fiber towel that I only use with Barricade for wiping my firearms after handling and putting away in the safe.

Also you should try high temp lithium wheel bearing grease. I prefer grease to oil as it "stays where I put it." A can of that and quart of synthetic motor oil will last you forever!

if people knew the test that mobil 1 underwent, they would never put anything else on their firearms.  There is nothing better unless you are paying out the nose which may.....MAY.....give you only marginal benefit over the mobil 1

I gotta find the article but a gun rag recently did long term testing on corrosion prevention and the best hands down was WD-40 Specialist corrosion prevention.  The results were so huge of a difference that a few museums started using it.

ok a quick stupid thing with olive oil.  I was given a k98 bringback from the vet that brought it home.  He was never a true gun nut and never had gun oils so he used olive oil for the past 60 years.   Well when he gave it to me the gun was almost sticky from dried out olive oil.  took about a month of soaking to get it clean but it cleaned up nicely.

    • I very seriously doubt this has anything to do with terrorism.    1) Harbor pilots are VERY seriously vetted, and highly trained. Not to mention extremely well paid. My experience knowing a few of them, and knowing how they are recruited and screened tells me that there is a slim to highly unlikely chance that a harbor pilot would have participated in anything like that.    2) Maintenance of foreign flag ships is well known to be dubious. Especially these days. These were NOT US flag, Jones act sailors. It was (to my understanding) a largely Indian crew on that ship, with a Ukrainian Captain. Indian crews are not exactly known for being stellar.    3) The bunkers (fuel) these ships use is ‘Bunker C’, which is a heavy, dirty fuel oil that can, and usually is, pretty contaminated. This stuff ain’t your car grade gasoline or diesel fuel. It’s nasty.   It requires nearly constant filter changes and maintenance to the engine/generators. The ship took on fuel prior to departing port, which would stir up all kinds of shit in the fuel tanks, which would contribute to particulates in the fuel lines/filters.    4) I’d say the posting of the chief engineer for Maserek above was pretty spot on as far as chain of events.    This was a shitty accident, with horrible timing and outcome. Not a terror attack.

Regardless, if it's not applicable in any way to this ship disaster, the methods described seem valid to me. And worthy of consideration for the future. As I said before, IMO something is coming.
