wweng 1 Posted March 3, 2015 I'm wondering is it possible to get the stock cut down to get the weight below 50 oz and be legal. It looks like you could take a little off in front of the bipod mount and also off the bottom of the stock behind the bipod mount.
njJoniGuy 2,131 Posted March 3, 2015 I'm thinking it would have to be done by a cooperative FFL prior to you taking delivery of the newly-proper weight handgun.
ogfarmer 138 Posted March 3, 2015 its 50.08 oz so not much needs to be shaved off. I been wondering this too since I got permits coming in few days.
PK90 3,570 Posted March 3, 2015 It can only be done by an FFL07. They must also stamp their info on it, as it is being remanufactured. ETA: Recent advertising by Ruger and personal measurement found that the weight is under 50 ounces.
Underdog 1,593 Posted March 3, 2015 I believe that there is a problem with the magazine being separate from the grip, as well. One of the take-down chargers would be a really neat thing to have. Unfortunately, the Repuplik doesn't support freedom.

Paul - couldn't that be look as as making it be NJ compliant like shaving a bayo lug and be done by an 01 ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
PK90 3,570 Posted March 3, 2015 Not according to ATF. Anything other than cosmetic changes needs to be done by a manufacturer, and they must stamp their info on it. Altering firearms on a customer's gun is gunsmithing and can be done by any dealer. Of course, the Charger can not be transferred on paper until the changes are made. ETA: IMO, altering the stock is a cosmetic change.

maintenanceguy 510 Posted March 4, 2015 Ruger couldn't come up with a way to shave off .08 oz? I know NJ's not a large part of their market but come on.
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted March 4, 2015 Have it shipped to an FFL that can make the alterations, have them drill out holes under the barrel portion of the stock.. I dont see why you couldn't shed 3 grams to put you safely under 50oz, or get the barrel fluted.. problem is i would be concerned to even add a nicer grip in fear of adding weight. JackDaWack 2,895 Posted March 4, 2015 It can only be done by an FFL07. They must also stamp their info on it, as it is being remanufactured. why would it be considered re-manufacturing? Even if you found(haven't looked) a lighter stock for it?
PK90 3,570 Posted March 4, 2015 Because ATF says that if a firearm is altered in certain ways prior to sale for sale, it is manufacturing (requires stampings) and not gunsmithing. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/manufacturers.html#dealer-gunsmithing
njJoniGuy 2,131 Posted March 4, 2015 https://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/manufacturers.html#dealer-gunsmithing What a crock of smelly horsesh1t ! ATF should be your local adult entertainment store, not a rogue government agency.
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted March 4, 2015 Can I purchase the firearm, then with out taking possession have it altered? Its just getting around the fact the ffl altering it before the sale. That's definitely the most confusing BS I have read to date...
wweng 1 Posted March 5, 2015 Does anybody know of a FFL07 in South Jersey?

njJoniGuy 2,131 Posted June 26, 2015 Looks like a trimmed-stock version of this: http://ruger.com/products/22Charger/specSheets/4917.html Is the barrel still 10" with the thread protector permanently attached, or is it shorter, having been trimmed and recrowned?
PK90 3,570 Posted June 26, 2015 I edited the original picture to where the stock needs to be cut, leaving the mount and flush with the trunnion to look cosmetically right. Taking suggestions on the brake, crowning or nut, keeping in mind the weight is close.
njJoniGuy 2,131 Posted June 26, 2015 Looking at the mfgr specs, the weight of 3.1 lb = 49.6 oz which makes it jersey-legal without a stock trim. As to the muzzle, I'd be inclined to hit the protector/barrel joint with 4 equidistant tack welds, clean them up with a dremel and birchwood casey black pen. Less muss and fuss than doing woodworking and recrowning the barrel. Biggest downside is it still has a crap 10/22 trigger unless you drop in the $75 factory upgrade or a more expensive one, like a Volquartsen.
PK90 3,570 Posted June 26, 2015 You can not have a handguard on it. Hence, cutting the stock.

tennturk 9 Posted July 12, 2015 Cut the barrel to 5" and I'd buy one.

ogfarmer 138 Posted September 15, 2015 thanks, there was some people looking for nj legal options on a nj guns for sale page on FB.
howellgunworks 1 Posted September 30, 2015 We looked into this as we had a lot of folks asking...short answer is since the weight of the gun exceeds the 48oz nonsense from the factory its not NJ compliant, regardless of what weight you do to it "aftermarket".......we have an 07 and a NJ State manufacturers license. I guess in theory we could mess with it, get it down below the 50oz, stamp the receiver with Howell Gun Works LLC, Howell NJ, submit a manufacturing report, pay an excise tax...........which would make a cool affordable pistol quite expensive and time consuming.....hardly worth it. This is another example of NJ Firearms regulations being extremely stupid..........
howellgunworks 1 Posted September 30, 2015 The best option would be Ruger making a factory compliant gun......they promised a NJ/MA compliant AR556 soon....maybe they'll be inclined to do a NJ version of the charger...one day
PK90 3,570 Posted February 23, 2018 BUMP for the new thread question regarding the 22 ChargerSent from an undisclosed location via Tapatalk
maintenanceguy 510 Posted February 23, 2018 I've emailed Ruger a couple of times over the last few years to suggest a NJ compliant model. Checked the spec sheets today, they still say 50oz. NJ's law says a "manufactured weight" under 50 oz. I assume that it could be converted with someone with a manufacturer's license but that would make it an awfully expensive gun.
