Recommend me a .22 rifle

I want to start teaching my little guy how to shoot and the importance of gun safety. He's 5 and I want to start him off with a halfway decent (non expensive) rifle rather than a handgun. What would you suggest as I'm not well versed in the .22 world. I'm thinking .22 bolt action?

I agree that bolt action (or even something single shot) is better to start.

 

Keep it slow, learn to aim, etc... not just rapid fire until they happen to hit something.

I know nothing about this rifle but there is CZ 452 Scout for young shooters out there.

At that age, bolt action single shot like the Cricket...as he progresses go to a bolt action / mag fed like a Savage Mark II(with a bipod)...then onto semi auto.

The nice thing about the Cricket is that is is likely to fit your son.  A 10/22 is great.  Savage makes great 22 bolts but they won't fit a 5 year old.  Even the Cricket might need a little trim.

Yea a  Savage bolt def big for 5yr old...Kids grow like weeds, my boy is 11 now, was 10 when he started and was on the cusp between youth and regular...the Savage Mark II I got for him when he was 10 was a lil too big, but hes now growing into it nicely.

I like the Savage Rascal better than the Cricket. On the real market about the same price and it appears to be made better.

There's still a 2 yr old with poopy pants. Lol. And believe me sometimes I wish he couldn't talk still. Lol

Yes and no. My club does an NRA day that is geared towards kids. There is no cert though

I looked at that but it looks like its more for kids that already can shoot.  I could be mistaken though.

I did not see it mentioned yet, you could also look into the Ruger American Rimfire. On a plus side it uses the Ruger 10/22 mags.
