"PUBLIC SAFETY: Con artists have been mailing bogus arrest warrants to people in an attempt to swindle them out of money, acting New Jersey Attorney General John J. Hoffman warned this morning.

In addition to calling victims over the phone, scammers are mailing out the phony warrants that purport to be from state or federal authorities.

In one of them (above), the letterhead says that the “warrant” was issued by the U.S. District Court and claims that the target is charged with criminal violations — including “collateral check fraud” and “theft by deception” –and faces “a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of up to $24,000.

It then directs the target to pay an “outstanding balance” of $1,876.48, and to call a phone number with a 609 area code to arrange for a payment plan."

So now in addition to watching out for spoofed caller ID numbers time to watch the mail as well. Thanks for the update.

But unless there's local PD at your door or a sheriff at you door, just hang up or toss the letter. And even if there is, call 911 if they seem the least bit sketchy.

 

Another scam by the way is "Microsoft" calling to alert you to viruses they have detected on your computer. No one legitimate calls about this. They will direct you to get on your computer, go to some web site and install some software from the web site. The software is likely a key logger and other back door fun tools they will be using to screw you. Then... After they have you infect your own computer with their crap, they will either have you enter a credit card number at their website or give it to them over the phone.

 

Or they'll take your checking acct number and routing number to drain your bank account or do the same with paypal.

 

Be diligent. Assume any letter you get, call you get, or knock at the door is a thief.

i don't answer the door at home for anyone, unless i recognize them. when mom's up here, she doesn't either. don't answer the house phone, unless it's her, or my good friend that calls me there when i don't answer the cell phone. since i work, shoot, sleep, i'm confident that there are no arrest warrants out for me, lololol

The sad thing is, a lot of people fall for these scams.

The last Indian that called me "from microsoft to fix my computer";

I offered him my social security number, credit card or bank account number- his choice.

 

I think he died of happy-shock. he could not reply.

State of New Jersey did that about 10 years ago.

 

They sent out tens of thousands of letters to businesses claiming they had failed to pay payroll taxes. Funny thing was, more than half of the letters said that the business owed exactly $3,000. If you called, or wrote letters, they refused to provide ANY accounting of what you had paid or what you owed. Only way was to pay them or go to court.

My wife got an automated call last week claiming it was the IRS and that if we didn't call back they would put out an arrest warrant.  These scams are getting way out of hand.

I got the same call from "Officer Franklin Benjamin of the United States of America Department of Internal Revenue Services" in a thick accent. He said a warrant was going to be issued for my arrest for tax fraud but it wasn't too late to take care of the problem. I thanked him for calling and hung up.

That scam has been going on for years.  I get a scam call once a week.  They just never give up.  I wish I can reach into the line and ring their necks.
