Malsua 1,422 Posted June 1, 2015 So I watched a couple of episodes of Animal Planet's "The Last Alaskans" last night and I kept seeing Ray Lewis walking around with his rifle. It looks like a Winchester 1895 to me, but there's some problems with that. It sort of looks stainless or just completely lost all the bluing. There's a rear sight on the action, which I didn't think was done like that and there's a nub on the top of the stock where it meets the shoulder and that looks funny to me as well. Shrug. I've never owned one, only held one many years ago. I'm just curious really, it looks like a neat lever action, probably chambered in 30.06 and I wouldn't want anything less for that area of wilderness. Thoughts? Old School 611 Posted June 1, 2015 A well worn 1895 Winchester
High Exposure 5,635 Posted June 1, 2015 A well worn 1895 Winchester Agreed, with an aftermarket Lyman or maybe Skinner peep sight.
Parker 213 Posted June 1, 2015 Williams WGRS receiver peep mated directly to the 1895's bolt. Not uncommon but often unseen today. Another example, only mounted to a '94:
Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted June 1, 2015 Deluxe Model 71's had bolt mounted peeps from the factory. You could screw-out the aperture and have a ghost ring rear sight - great for moving targets. While the rifle in question is undoubtedly a model 95, model 71's were popular with Alaskan guides in both the stock .348 Winchester and wildcats thereof. Wonder what caliber the 95 is? IIRC they were available in .30-40 Krag / .30-06 / .405 Winchester Adios, Pizza Bob
Old School 611 Posted June 1, 2015 I'd bet 30-06. Hey it's Alaska Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Parker 213 Posted June 1, 2015 Love that look of worn bluing. I'll suspect the gun pre-date's the rear peep by a few years.
Malsua 1,422 Posted June 1, 2015 Yeah, that is a pretty cool look. Not to mention the guy looks enough like he's straight off the set of There will be blood as Daniel Day Lewis's stand it. They share a last name and a look...maybe DDL is playing a joke

Impossible.... what if the TV show director sees a bear and yells at the camera guy to "SHOOT THE BEAR"! Then what...... he has to decide to use his camera, or 44 Mag. I am kidding, I would carry too.

Redlines 202 Posted June 12, 2015 It's 35 Winchester , he says he likes the old calibers .
Malsua 1,422 Posted June 12, 2015 It's 35 Winchester , he says he likes the old calibers . I saw that episode, I just hadn't gotten back around to this thread. That's a caliber I know nothing about but reading the wiki on it, it appears to be about equal to or slightly more juice than .308 and not quite 30.06. Malsua 1,422 Posted June 12, 2015 Shouldn't that sign be updated to say Black Bear feces contains lots of berries and smells like curry? This big boy is now visiting once or twice a day, this was Wed: https://youtu.be/sDhQQwSiy1Y I saw him again this morning at 5:15 when I was walking my dog. I'm not sure what caliber I'd want to live up there, but .375 H&H or .416 Rigby comes to mind.
