Question for a..um...friend

So I have this...um...friend...who is moving to a new town in 2 weeks and apparently he has misplaced his FID card.  He thought is was in his safe, but alas, it is nowhere to be found.  The question is, should he go to his current town PD and request a duplicate before moving, or just wait until he gets settled in the new town and then just request a new FID with his new address and go thru the entire process all over again?  Can he go to the PD in his new town and say his FID got lost in the move.  He has the FID number from his PPs, just cant find the damn card anywhere.   Anyway, any info you can send my way...my...um friend will greatly appreciate it.  Thanks.

do in new town, you have to apply for change of address within 30 days of moving anyways by law for FID. Why pay twice and wait twice. It will be pretty much a start from scratch in both places anyways.

You can do whatever you want. The law requires you to get a new one, but there is no penalty for not doing so. There is also no law saying your FID becomes invalid for not doing it. There are many reasons your FID can become invalid by law, and this is not one of them. Then again, this is New Jersey, and the lower case citizen dabbles in firearms at his own peril. Most NJ gun dealers probably won't sell you a gun and cops will probably bust you for possession of a firearm without a matching address (not in any statute or code) and a judge will probably back them up.

 

I am not a lawyer and you live in New Jersey so everything I just said might be factual but doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

No. But its been reported that some towns ask for it. Most don't seem to ask. If they ask, you lost it.

If I had a personal document with my info on it, that related to firearms floating around in an unknown area.. personally.. I would bite the bullet and report it to someone.. just in case it shows up somewhere at some point... or in case I supposedly use it to buy a long gun that I didn't actually buy..

Same thing happened to me. I really did lose mine during a move. My new town did ask for my old ID card and I told them I lost it. I was instructed to destroy it if I ever found it. a few months later I found it (in my gun safe of all places) and ran it through the shredder

I lost mine and the new town had me file a report so there was a record and then I did the change of address. If I were you I would go and file the report now so your ready with the proper paperwork when you get to the new town.

 Actually there is a law...and the card becomes invalid after 30 days.

   (a) A State of New Jersey firearms purchaser identification card shall be valid until such time as the holder becomes subject to any of the disabilities set forth by law and this subchapter pertaining to an applicant's eligibility. Upon becoming subject to any of the disabilities set forth in this subchapter, the card shall be void and shall be returned to the Superintendent within five days. A State of New Jersey firearms purchaser identification card shall not be valid for more than 30 days after the information contained therein is no longer reflective of the issued person, that is, current address, name change, and/or sex change.

It's worth noting that it's not illegal to own firearms in NJ without an FID card. The FID permits the purchase and transport of arms in NJ, not possession. Of course, this is only valid if the firearms were legally obtained, within NJ or otherwise.
