Asked by The Trentonian how many are in New Jersey there was some hemming and hawing by Guikema, so I asked for an “over or under.”

He guessed about 50 swine are on the loose in South Jersey, mainly in the Gloucester County area, but said even a hunted population can double in five years. The pigs breed once a year, possibly twice, and have two to six piglets in a litter. A problem with control is that they have few natural predators ... unlike the nearly non-existent wild bobwhite quail in New Jersey which was a seminar and future column topic.

A huge concern of the USDA, other than wild pigs turning crop fields into waste land, is that the pigs have the potential of carrying about 30 diseases and 37 types of parasites that can be a threat to livestock, pets and humans. Hunters are allowed to shoot feral hogs in zones 25 and 65 during the regular deer seasons, according to the Division of Fish and Wildlife. If bagged, they must be checked in. Consult the regs. Meanwhile Guikema said any sightings of feral pigs should be reported to Fish & Wildlife or the USDA.

I just realized how dumb my question was. I though yu could hunt coyotes with an AR in NJ, but apparently you can't even hunt them anymore.

You can hunt coyote and fox during the special coyote/fox season during daylight hours with a center fire rifle up to .25cal. So yes you can hunt them with an AR.

And during almost every other hunting season you can kill fox or coyote on sight with whatever your using to hunt game with at that moment.

where do you go?

Mohr's Widowmaker in Bainbridge, PA.  They hunt on a 150 acre island.  NO license required.  I usually use a brace of black powder Cap and Ball revolvers.  Last Hunt I used my black powder .50 cal percussion Lyman Trade Rifle w/ a 370 grain conical bullet.

Yes it's a bit of a canned hunt, but since I limit myself to using antiques I feel I've compensated for it.  It's a driven hunt and you chase the Hogs and harvest them.  One thing it's NOT is a "Tioga Hunt" (ala YouTube) where you rest your rifle on a trimmed tree branch and shoot a hog while it's under a feeder at a whopping 25 yards distance, lol!  For $375 (instead of $600) it's relatively affordable.

I'll be going in March or April again.  I'll also be selling $10 chances on a Hunt for TWO (at Mohr's) featuring not one but TWO Hogs, so you can bring a Buddy on the adventure!  $750 worth of Hunting for a $10 chance.  Interested yet??  LOL, PM me for details and as soon as the particulars are worked-out, I'll let you know what and when.

What's the distance you're shooting at? What's the most common caliber people use there (that isn't black powder)? Will a .308 suffice? I have heard their hide is durable and tough to get any reliable penetration through....

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
    • I get the added benefit that since I have a TSP rather than a true 401(k) they tax my retirement too. Yaaaay!
