Finally got a black powder gun!

Recommended Posts

So, I went a bit crazy after Christmas and had some cash to get rid of. So no better time to go to cabelas! When I got there, I realize I forgot my Fid (like a dumbass). Not wanting to come home empty handed, I started looking at cap and Ball and muzzle loading guns. Ended up walking out with a Pietta 1860 New Army in 44 cal (along with another 150 dollars worth of ammo for my other toys).

Any recs on powder?

#10 Remington percussion caps

Goex FFFg real Black Powder

.454 soft lead balls

#4400 Ox-Yoke pre-lubed .45 cal wonder-wads

Use 27 grains of powder for optimum accuracy.  Yes Cabela's sells Black Powder, but you have to find an employee who KNOWS where the Powder Magazine is located in the back behind the wall of guns.  Good luck and let me know if ya need any other help!

Oh YEAH......Black Powder Gunz......now you just need another one for your other hand.....

If you tinker, you can follow these steps to smooth out your Pietta;

http://www.theopenrange.net/articles/Tuning_the_Pietta_Part_Two.pdf

For rounds balls in bulk, you can order them from an independent caster here, I've been dealing with him for years;

You can get .45 cal felt wads here;

http://www.buffaloarms.com/wool_felt_wads_pr-4115.aspx

If you accidentally order DRY wads like I did, you can always put a handful in a glass jar and loob them up with olive oil.

And you might wanna get one of these, so your hand don't get sore;

Loading Stand;

If you can't get, or don't wanna use real black, I recommend APP, nice and smokey alternative to real black that cleans up easily.

Powder Flask;

Capper;

I got some pyrodex pellets to try (only 20 bucks, worth a shot hehehe) no caps to be found at cabelas though. And the customer service was a bit lacking tonight.

Where's a good place to find caps? All they had were 209 caps, and got blank stares when asking about 210 caps.

I'll definitely have to get a a capper too before I do anything.

I've never had much luck finding caps locally to me (North Jersey), so I've purchased in bulk online and had them shipped.

Here's some google results;

https://www.google.com/search?q=remington+%2310+caps&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Regarding the Pyrodex, be sure to wash your gun right away, and Pyrodex contains gremlins that like to rust and pit unclean gunz.

I'll probably end up ordering a ton from sportsmans warehouse. Good prices and stuff is in stock.

I like to give my guns a good once over after a range trip, so that wont be much of an issue.

I get powder from both clubs I'm a member of (at a reduced rate since it's w/o any retail mark-up), so membership(s) has its' privileges!  PLUS I can drive to Dixon's in Kempton, PA. for any granulation.

Percussion caps I buy at Dixon's and at Cabela's in Hamburg, PA (Cabela's is 11 miles further west on Rt. 78 from Dixon's).  Since I'm a competitive Shooter, I always have several pounds of black and a thousand caps or more on-hand at all times.

That old Mom and Pop Shop in Milford had a lot of stuff.  But they're gone now from what i understand.  Something (a male first name) and Ethel's was its' name.

Simon Peter also carries caps.  Not sure about real black powder, but I and friends have bought caps there too!

Let me know if you wanna come to a Match.  You can often get supplies there.

    • Sorry, both are SPF.  Being picked up this week. Win M22  22 LR SPF to Ringwoodfrank.
    • Yup I see. Looks like right now you can only purchase the 2023-2024 permit still. I assume won't be able to purchase 24-25 season permit until July.
    • Just a heads-up for anyone who might also be in this situation. I joined USLS mid-April of 2022. Some time after renewing for 2023, I changed email providers, and dutifully reflected my new address on my account page. So, I have been anticipating renewal alerts at my new address, but those never arrived. I logged in to my account the other day, and was surprised to see that my subscription expired that same day. I went to my account main information page, confimed that my email address was correct, then went to the billing page, which showed my previous two payments, but which did not give me any apparent way to pay up for the new year. I requested support using the Customer Service form on the web site, but received no reply. Today I called their support number. Apparently changing the email address from my view of my account page did nothing to change the address that they use internally for billing purposes, including expiration notifications. Maybe they also use that address for replies to the support form, even if a different email address is entered there. Also, my account was set up to auto-renew and charge my credit card without my intervention, but that setting did not show on my account page in any obvious way. So, if you have USLS and have changed your email address since you last renewed, you might want to give them a call to ensure that they send renewal information to your correct address. The prospect of having legal coverage lapse while carrying in NJ was, for me, a less that confidence inspiring experience. I will note that the telephone-based customer service was excellent.
    • F*n imbeciles. They know damned well (or should) that, even if passed by the Colorado Senate and signed into law, virtually that entire load of crap is certain to fail Bruen/Heller scrutiny, and probably sooner, rather than later (SCOTUS). What a monumental waste of time (of course, how much can a dip$h*t's time be worth, anyway?) and energy. I passed through Colorado a few times in the 70s, and visited some clients there in the 80's & 90's, and, even by the end of that period, I had the impression that it was politically fairly conservative (with a few exceptions such as Aspen). WTF happened?
