Pocket Multi-Tool

I am looking for a multi-tool that I can keep in my cargo pocket. They are already stuffed so I don't want anything too heavy or large.

 

I already have a knife so I don't need any blades although I realize most if not all have one (or two or three). No need for a corkscrew, bottle openers, or scissors.

 

I really want the pliers, wire cutter, a few small screwdrivers (both flat and philips), and if possible a 1/4" tool socket. I wouldn't mind a file but not a necessity.

 

It is a shame no one makes a build your own tool with the basic frame where you could add your own tool selection.

 

Any recommendations or am I asking for too little?

 

btw: I already own a Leatherman Surge with bit kit. Great tool but too big and heavy for EDC.

I have a couple Gerber's that were good for the price but they have stuff that you weren't looking for.

I keep a Leatherman Skeletool CX with me at all times. One blade, pliers, wire cutters, two sizes flat head and two sizes philips...and a bottle opener at the end.

 

The socket tool might be a tough find. I'm sure they're out there but then it'll prob be bulky.

Leatherman Skeletool CX.  Very light.  Includes the knife (half-serrated), Pliers, Wire cutters and screwdrivers.  No socket tool or file though.

I never looked at the Skeletool CX as from the photo's it always looked big. It takes the other Leatherman bits which I have which gives it more capability (but something else for me to carry). I also have the Leatherman 1/4" bit driver extension but I am not going to carry that plus sockets. Not a bad set of tools at 5 oz. I have to go handle it to get a better feel for it.

 

One very minor downside is that it has a locking blade (which should be good) but that means I can't take it into NYC. I have gotten used to having to change knives when I go to NYC with a slip joint knife so just another pain.

Call me paranoid but NYC is serious about knives. They arrest people for just regular pocket knives. They make NJ look good. I like my freedom (as much as we have left). Re-adjusting my tin foil hat

^about 8 years ago I checked my knife in at the metal detector in the empire state building with a police officer, he put it in a bag gave me a ticket with a number on it. When I got back down I gave him my ticket and he gave me my knife back no problem. Take that for what it's worth

Thanks for all of the advice. I finally got the Leatherman Skeletool for a great under $30 (from Home Depot with free shipping). It's relatively light and small and so far I am happy with it.

My brother spent a night in the tombs and got a misdemeanor weapons charge for a pocket knife on the subway. Funny part is he's a chef and they told him if he had his chef knives it'd be fine

no joke this year i purchased 10 multi tools on amazon and returned them all except for my SOG S44n. i own a christmas light company (i know sounds odd) but I'm out on roofs and in trees and constantly cutting electrical wire, and a multitude of needing to cut clamp and tear. we use our multi tools 50+ times a day so i bought a ton of different models this year in an effort to find "the best" tales  for my needs atleast, i used a gerber crucial last year but it was a little too small (loved the build in beaner as i need all my tools attached to me being on a roof) i was most optimistic about the leatherman skeletool as it has a large blade and beaner but the wire cuter is TINY and bad design if you need to apply pressure in your grip, it hurts your hand.

 

the SOG S44n is just slightly bigger than the leatherman skel, but oh man the clamp and cutting power of the pliers can't be matched in a multi tool. it has a compound leverage system that multiples your grip strength. the difference between this and my old gerber cutting lamp cord was crazy, i can do it with a pinky effort now. i would highly recommend any of the SOG with compound leverage.

I’ve carried a skeleton in Manhattan 5-6 days a week for the last 10 years. I’ve gotten stopped with it several times but never had an issue. If you can’t flip the blade with a single motion they won’t bust your chops. I always tell them it’s a tool i use for work and usually I’m sent on my way, twice though i had a cop damn near dislocate his shoulder flipping my knife so hard trying to get it open.

I think I read that they are working on a device that will allow them to flick the knife with 500 pounds of force. Something about flux capacitors. Not sure where I saw that.

I bought a second tool for NYC. I just removed the knife. Now I can have the tool (plus bits) with me all of the time. I also have a slip joint knife for NYC.

What do you do that you get shaken down by cops?

I don't know if this is his reason but if you carry with the clip out you have a very high probability of getting stopped in NYC.

I travel in and ou through Penn station, there’s always tons of cops floating around there. When it’s a slow day they look for people with knives clipped on their pockets or belts.  Mean while the homeless guy with a sharpened hockey stick roams around screaming at tourist and somehow they don’t see him.

NJGF gave you your solution.  Just don't clip it to your belt or pocket.  Carry it in your pocket.

Lots of cops in Penn station.  Lots of people there make it a terrorist target.
