joeg 3 Posted January 18, 2016 I looked at a few forums and asked some people and can't get a straight answer. Is it legal to own this knife in NJ? I've read that only mentally ill people cannot own OTF knives and you can't own it for unlawful purposes. What if the purpose is to strip wire or cut up debris? n4p226r 105 Posted March 12, 2016 I'm pretty sure collecting could be a lawful purpose. but with the switchblade, dagger, etc type knives more of the proof of lawful ownership falls on the user.

I ordered most of them online and no one has had a problem shipping them to me.
maintenanceguy 509 Posted March 13, 2016 Two parts of the law: 1) It's illegal to possess a dirk, dagger, or stiletto without a lawful purpose. 2) It's illegal to possess any kind of knife (or any weapon) with an unlawful purpose. So a dirk, dagger, or stiletto is illegal unless you have a lawful purpose for having one. All other knives are legal unless you have an unlawful purpose for having one. I'm not sure who decides if your knife is a dirk or not.

Purple Patrick 638 Posted March 13, 2016 What is a lawful purpose? Is self defense considered lawful? Is carrying it in case you need to cut a rope or other object, lawful? In new jersey self defense is most definitely not a lawful purpose. Carrying a non automatic folder is generally acceptable as long as it isn't overly scary or big as long as you can defend why you have it. I work at a garden center and as a florist. I feel super comfortable backing up why I carry a potent knife. My normal carry and hard use knives(because I use them all day) are a zt 0562cf and an emerson sheepdog rangemaster. Both aren't overally scary on their own and both are worn enough to show I use them. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Rob0115 1,105 Posted March 14, 2016 I thought ballistic knives weren't legal in NJ? I have an infidel I bought in FL, but wouldn't be comfortable having it in NJ.
rifleman 90 Posted March 14, 2016 Well, now I can get the dirk I have always wanted. For legal purpose only! My regular carry knives are Spyderco; excellent tools.
maintenanceguy 509 Posted March 17, 2016 Ballistic knives are probably illegal under the firearm laws. In NJ if it shoots a projectile by spring pressure and could injure someone, it's a firearm.
