medved11 71 Posted March 10, 2016 I'm thinking about putting a 15" Troy Alpha rail on my next build that will be using a 16" barrel with a pinned Surefire brake or Dynacomp (I've got both brakes in my cart but one or the other is going to be deleted) but I'm having a little difficulty picturing how that set up will look. Does anyone have any pictures of a similar set up that they can share to help me visualize this set up? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
cold shot 1 Posted March 10, 2016 Take a look at my AR that I have for sale - it has a 13" Troy Battlerail TRX and does not leave much room for the brake. http://www.njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/80571-wts-custom-built-mega-arms-ar15-reduced/
T Bill 649 Posted March 10, 2016 Here's a pic for you, Not mine, just a pic off the net Samson 15" on a PSA 16" Middy :
High Exposure 5,635 Posted March 11, 2016 Good choice on the Troy tube. They're my first choice when putting a tube on an already built upper - using the stabdard barrel it saves aggravation when dealing with an already pinned muzzle device. I like mine a lot - although I prefer the 13" to the 15". Those extra 2" don't do much besides add weight. Unless you have ridiculously long arms, its wasted real estate IMO. Two of mine: 13" Troy Alpha with 16" barrel: 13" Troy Alpha with 14.5" barrel and pinned Troy brake:
medved11 71 Posted March 11, 2016 Thanks for the pics - I'm starting to be swayed towards the 13" rail Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
M1152 713 Posted March 11, 2016 Good choice on the Troy tube. They're my first choice when putting a tube on an already built upper - using the standard barrel it saves aggravation when dealing with an already pinned muzzle device. I like mine a lot - although I prefer the 13" to the 15". Those extra 2" don't do much besides add weight. Unless you have ridiculously long arms, its wasted real estate IMO. Two of mine: 13" Troy Alpha with 16" barrel: 13" Troy Alpha with 14.5" barrel and pinned Troy brake: Quick question if you don't mind, So If you had to you can remove and slide the tube off/over the brake? I realize the gas block isn’t going anywhere but I always thought the pinned brake locked-in the free float rail as well. I’d been entertaining the thought of doing a build with a free floated rail but the pinned brake was always deal breaker since I thought the tube was not removable for repair/replacement do to the pinned brake. Thanks in advance
High Exposure 5,635 Posted March 11, 2016 Yeah, you can take the tube off, but not the barrel nut.

High Exposure 5,635 Posted March 11, 2016 I have a spare 13" Troy Alpha in FDE if you are looking for one. It's in good shape, it was installed on a rifle that never left the safe. PM me if interested.

Any idea how much it weighs with barrel nut? Sent from my ONE A2005 using Tapatalk
High Exposure 5,635 Posted March 11, 2016 Standard barrel nut is ~1.3oz and the rail is ~9.9oz according to the interwebs.

I don't think I have gorilla arms, but I'm over 6' so I don't have T-rex arms either. For me, the 15" handguards come in handy both because I like to reach out all the way out there for easier aiming, and also because they let me rest the hand guard on all sorts of things further out without resting on the barrel. But that's me, and I've come to understand that there are a lot of people who aren't me.
medved11 71 Posted March 11, 2016 I ended-up ordering the 15 inch Alpha rail and a Spikes Dynacomp Shorty to go with it. I'm not 100% certain that I'm going to mount an optic on this gun so I figured that the extra couple of inches will help extend the sight radius a little further than on the 13" version. Vlad G 345 Posted March 11, 2016 I think mounting sights on a 15" hand guard is a sub-ideal solution. 15" hand guards flex, all hand guards flex, but long ones flex more, I have no problem deflecting the front sight when mounted on a 13" troy hand guard unless I'm really careful. Backup sights are what they are but on the guns where I have them they are mounted on the barrel and effectively free floated away from the human interface bits (hand guard). medved11 71 Posted March 11, 2016 I get what you're saying - the worst case scenario here is that I end up putting a scope on the gun and the sights become back-up.
Vlad G 345 Posted March 11, 2016 Yeah, just be aware of it when you put pressure on handguards, backup sights are backup sights and they'll work, just don't push too hard against the handguard or you'll see you POI move by a few inches at 100 yards. Schrödinger's cat 87 Posted March 11, 2016 I know it's not the point, but I have 15" handguards with no flex at all, no matter how hard you grab them. They also weigh as much as a house. Made by sun devil billet.
checko 180 Posted March 13, 2016 I went for a 15" troy vtac for my spr project. I'm going with an 18 " barrel and figured the extra length will help with the bipod I put on. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Maksim 1,504 Posted March 13, 2016 Same here... I prefer the 13 over the longer 16. some folks do like the rail to stick out as far as possible... I prefer a little room.... particularly on a 14.5" barrel plus comp.
